Would you buy a Z4 Diesel if they made one

Actually I wouldn't even buy a Z4 with the 4 cylinder petrol engine in! Straight six (or minimal V6) or nothing! :P
I made sure my old 4x4 had a V8 in it...a 4 pot diesel would have never been up to the job for me! :poke: :)

Some people can only afford a 4 cylinder engine Z4 and there's nothing wrong with that

A bit of an invidious comment I think :poke:

Not really. Not a recommendation, just my preference. Anybody else can buy what they want.

If they made one, would you buy a 4cylinder diesel Porsche 911?

Blimey! people have got a bit touchy on here lately!

I don't have a Z4 now so probably time to move on.

But you bought a girls 4 x 4 :poke:

Did I say anything bad about a 4cyl Z4? :?

I was only ribbing you, I love the Evoque....nearly bought one for the wife, but went for Q5 in the end. :D

Only a little fun from me Breaker :) we went to buy a diesel Evoque last year & it was only a lousy main dealership experience that put us off but I am still a big fan of the Evoque without doubt.

Plus I love all the videos you put up of other Marques as it keeps things varied.

Nobody has said why they wouldn't have a diesel engine have they? It all seems to be mostly based on the utterings of Jeremy Clarkson!

Ok a manual with a diesel engine is a bit of a problem with its narrow power band but stick a decent auto box on the back and its fine. A 3.0 six with 250+bhp and 500Nm of torque along with 45/50mpg it cant all be bad news. Ok the sound might not be the same - but it can have that muscle car burble

That mirrors my thoughts on diesels very closely as my old 520d was a manual mated to a underpowered 4 pot & I hated it with a passion, yet the 330d was mated to an auto & at least had some poke & sounded a million times better than the 4 pot & I would recommend a 3.0 litre 6 pot diesel in a heartbeat.

Like most, I thought diesels were for 4x4's or Taxis until we got a V6 3.0 TDI A4 - It has some grunt and the Auto box keeps everything on song. I can imagine what such a motor in a zed would be like.

Agree  the 330d was my first experience with a diesel & I was genuinely impressed by its capability & it did change my mindset, I still ultimately prefer petrol but I also love the massive shove you get from the torque of a diesel that a petrol just doesn't seem to match. :)

If it was cheap and all I could afford then yes, but that's not to decry anyone.

Actually performance wise a reasonable diesel would compare to the 1.8i, but why bother with the diesel?

BMW Z4 sDrive18i Roadster

CO2 emissions (g/km) 159.0
Combined (mpg) 41.5
Cylinders/valves per cylinder 4/4
Capacity (cc) 1997
Max output bhp 156
Max torque (Nm/rpm) 240/1250-4400
41.5 mpg

My Evoque engine is a 2.2 Diesel
190BHP
420 Nm of torque.
0-60 is 8.0sec (100kph: 8.5)
C02 is 169 g/km
44.1 mpg

I guess the Evoque style diesel engine in a lighter Z4 would probably give more performance than the 1997cc petrol as the torque is heading towards the 35is six, but running costs are almost the same (actually could be higher with the diesel because of fuel costs).

Looking at those figures you can probably see why BMW decided against a diesel Z4.

On a different note, next years Evoque should be quite a mover as they are fitting a new 9 speed auto box that they say will take almost 2 sec of the 0-62 time!

Agreed, The issue really is BHP v mpg and the fuel type to maximise the energy.

You cant have something for nothing. The horses need feeding, but its what you do during 95% of the driving, lugging a 6 pot around at 30mph in the city will eat fuel, a lighter 4 pot will save energy. when you need the other 2 pots let the turbo take its place and tada. same (OR MORE) enjoyment for the 5% fun driving and increased mpg by dumping the 2 pots for the boring 95% of the rest of the driving. No brainer. Obviously pushing the 4 pot turbos will consume as much as the 6 pots. Reason why the 18i will be difficult to crack 41mpg. in my 28i im pushing 38MPG now which seems to be way more than the 20 or 18 yet I have 100 horses more compared to the 18i..... and 10mpg more than my old 6 pot 30i.

So different ways to crack the nut, F1 is bringing in different technologies in next year, and less valves along with less fuel allowance but no black stuff....yet. Would have been 4 pots but the people in red ponies say that its too far from their main engine stock, but 99.9999999% of the driving public dont drive them, but they do bring a few pennies into the sport including the avid supporters of the prancing ponies.
