Would you buy a Z4 Diesel if they made one

I would certainly consider it for the advantages of low fuel consumption and easier to increase power if it would be my daily drive. But it would have to make a nice sound, which usually is crap on diesels :x

No convertible should be a deisel!

Also if you do high miles then I would be brave enough to suggest you bought the wrong car. I don't hink the Z4 is refined enough to want to be in it on long journeys every day. Especially the E85 skateboard ride comfort

It ain't really a 'only' car. That's why most have a daily and the Zed for fun

I use my e85 doing long distances all the time.. And think its more then adequate.

The boot is big enough for 2 small suitcases and the seats are comfortable over a long drive too... More then the wifes fiesta.

Beg to differ. I almost always take the Zed for long distance business meetings. It's way more fun than refined saloon cars. Save that for family and when I simply have to carry lots of luggage.

Off on 200 mile round trip to a meeting and back today and it'll be roof roof down all the way back.

I think the e89 is better for long journeys than the e85, just a bit more refined but still I did over 20,000 miles a year with no problems in both.

and the e85 with non RFT's would have been much better :headbang:

My way by chance? If so, coffee ready as usual :)

+1

Not driving huge miles at the moment, but when I was driving 300-600 miles a week I never had any comfort issues, fuel consumption was good, and as cj says sticking the roof down all the way home at the end of a long day just loosens you up and makes the day a little special. Love it. Wouldn't have a diesel Z though, even as a long distance daily, purely because of the sound and feel.

Personally i would consider a 30d or 35d.... I love the low torque of my mums 330d. And most the miles in my Z are long distance.

Agree, a 35d in a zed & I think I would have to consider if I was doing high miles. Think that would be fun

Once Diesels found the turbocharger & high pressure common rail injection, became a game changer overnight.

Put a 35d in a Z4 & I'd certainly consider buying one

No

Diesels are more expensive to buy and service and with the difference in cost at the pump you have to do a lot of miles to make it an economic purchase.

It's not how much they cost to buy - but how much they cost to own.

And depending on how you finance your ownership diesels cars might cost more new but cost less to own - before even thinking about economy. Part of that ownership saving is down to lower dep[reciation because people don't do their sums and perceive the diesel to be cheaper to run (so will pay a higher premium for it used - doh!).

The SLK250CDI looks cheap to own on some deals.

Diesels should be bought because you like the driving style - they suit big comfortable automatics.... not roadsters IMO.

A Z4 with the 3.0 twin turbo diesel and the 8 speed ZF auto box would be quite something in terms of agility.

No diesel for me either, it is like comparing a 35is DCT with an M - might be fast enough, but it becomes "boring".

wouldn't have a diesel z4 but can't agree that no convertible should be a diesel I have a e93 320d and other than on start up its as quiet as the zed on the move, can have power increased significantly with a remap which would make it faster than the zed albeit without the 6 cylinder soundtrack

I would yes due to the miles i do. No 2 litre models though. 35D or the 40d that is in the new 6 series still a 3 litre so should fit and it would shift. Best of both worlds then for me. Personally, i think they would sell like hot cakes

Nope, nope trice nope, for all sorts of cost, mileage and reliability reasons, but mainly because the turbine-smooth petrol six was the main reason I bought a Z4. If I was high miler looking for a daily driver I would have a D, but I wouldn't be buying a Z4 in those circumstances so it's still a no.

If it did 0-62 in sub 6 seconds and 60mpg (price differential) I would run anything from a 500cc one cylinder compressed air contraption to one that runs on chip fat and bird poo. (I have a lot of birds in the garden doing the biz on my new patio).

If its +7 seconds or lower than 45 mpg no way no point. my 28i is popping up to 38mpg and climbing.

For me its the acceleration, smoothness is something I expect from limo.

Its subjective as well, like records V cd, me Im MP3 all the way, rather have all my music with me and usb my mobile rather than scrat around the glove compartment for the CD. Would look a bit stupid with a record player.

Good topic, my mrs does 30.000 miles a year & it would possibly have been more viable financially to have gone for the tdi TT but its hardly got enough power to pull the skin off a rice pudding so it's worth the extra expense to not have to listen to the clatter & the benefit of the extra performance.

Funnily enough she did ask me if you could get a zed in a diesel & I said no but it's credit to bmw that they don't do a diesel & have stuck to the sports car remit, as the 120d/320d/520d make tank loads of money for them as a business.
