Would you buy a Z4 Diesel if they made one

How come Audi make a TT Diesel and BMW don't make a Z4 Diesel.I know they are smokey motors but i've just been looking at newish 3 series petrol and diesel versions and there is about 16 mpg difference.
Fuel consumption (extra urban) 74.3 mpg
Fuel consumption (combined) 61.4 mpg
Based on a 3 series 2.0l Diesel.
If a Z4 diesel version was available, would you have gone for one instead of the petrol?
More or less the same performance, but the diesel has 280 lbs/ft Engine torque and the petrol has 199 lbs/ft Engine torque (both are 2.0l models)

Yes, I probably would. My Audi TDI definitely ain't smokey and they have loads of torque. As said above, mpg figures are far superior. The SLK 250 CDI gets some great reviews. With the right size of engine and tuned exhaust, I reckon it would be a good choice for the Z4.

No

Diesels are more expensive to buy and service and with the difference in cost at the pump you have to do a lot of miles to make it an economic purchase.

Diesels should be bought because you like the driving style - they suit big comfortable automatics.... not roadsters IMO.

As above. Most think 'get a diesel because they're more economical'.

BUT only if you do high miles. They are more expensive to buy, more expensive to service/MOT and were not even touching the surging low rev rattle power awfulness. Oh and there's that DPF issue too which means you HAVE to do large miles or your car clogs up costing even more money.

Diesels are for long distance cruisers IMHO . Petrol still has its place.

Nope. I do c.4000 miles a year in the zed. Prefer petrol

Diesel makes sense though, for mass market. Easy way for BMW to boost sales, especially for those who use the zed as a daily driver and do lots of miles

nope - IMHO the brilliant aesthetics and that 6 cylinder engine makes a great combination and if it didnt have both, I wouldnt own it

and the car industry seems to be moving to small petrol engined multi turbos at the mo

the golf diesel cabriolet has been a slow seller - VW has introduced it and re introduced it over the years, it seems to be taking off at last

If I could have had a diesel Z4 or TT for the same price that I paid for my E46 320d daily driver then I definitely would have bought the diesel "sports" car. I wanted a car that was cheap to buy and run for a long daily commute to work; I didn't need four seats and a big boot. I bought the car I did because it returned the best mpg and had the best performance of the cars that were available within my budget as well as being RWD and of high spec. However, I wouldn't buy a diesel Z4 instead of petrol as a sportscar in its own right.
I would think that a 3l turbodiesel Z4 would be stonkingly quick but soulless to drive.

Personally i would consider a 30d or 35d.... I love the low torque of my mums 330d. And most the miles in my Z are long distance.

The thing here though I think at least is that most Z's are low milers, which is no good for diesel. I do 6000 a year, most in 4 mile runs, which would mean about six months and a replacement DPF at god knows what cost... certainly enough cost to make diesel way more expensive to run than petrol.

As I do 20,000 miles a year a definite yes from me, but it would have to be that silky smooth 3.0 diesel connected to a DCT for me.

I wouldn't because I don't do the mileage to benefit and like the high revving of a petrol as a n antidote to the way diesels drive. It's also a fun car so that's the key factor.

On my Jag the 3.0 twin turbo is awesome. As others have said they suit big autos. Point of interest the 3.0 jag is faster than the 3.0 Z4 I have. Quite astounding to feel the torque (all 600nm of it) push 2 tones of car along and past almost anything on the road and from lights.

Interesting topic.

Right now, I wouldn't as I don't do the miles, and overall, would prefer a petrol for the usual reasons.

However, I used to drive a lot of miles to/from work (25k per year or so) - I did the last couple of months of that in the Z, and compared to the diesel leon I had before, obviously spent a fortune in fuel. I'd decided I wanted the car and just to take the hit - then for various reasons I ended up on the train most of the time, and then moved to being self employed/working from home, so the car has stayed :D . If I was still doing the miles, I suspect I'd have decided to move on to something more economical by now... and in that situation, a diesel TT would have been on the list, I like the roadster aspects of the Z on top of performance - the drive, position, looks etc, and I love the roof down, so chance to keep those things would be the appeal.

So... to my logic, there'd be a market for a diesel Z!
