I used to have 123d coupe though, I don't think any one should slag off 4 cylinder diesels until they've had a go in one of those.
They do rate they 123d very very highly & I haven't ever read a poor review of it, but I seriously hated the 4 pot diesel in my old 520d it was noisy, unrefined & gutless it's the worst engine I've ever experienced & I judge all 4 pot diesels in the same vein after that unfortunetely & probably unfairly.
Yes I reckon a 520d must be a pretty terrible car too :D

"Would you buy a Z4 Diesel if they made one" NO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Mind you, I wouldn't buy a DIEsel full stop - it's the work of the devil

You are a good judge of cars, spot on.

Not for me, we used to have two diesel cars now both our cars are petrol. There are some good diesel engines out there, but for me they don't quiet yet have the character and sound for a true convertible/roadster.

The 4-pot turbo petrol units in the Z4 sound so good that BMW have to fake it.

(Which is what they also apparently do on the 640d  ).

No, but only because I don't do enough miles to make it worthwhile.

Modern diesels are much more sophisticated than the old noisy smokey engines in the past. They are quiet, and the mid range performance is quite astonishing.

Your TT wasn't a V5 - it was a 4 pot Turbo

Wonder what that 5V Turbo was stuck on the engine?

Goes to show did and does not matter to me.

Boxters with the engine just behind your head is like having a VW beetle engine noisy and uncomfortable over a long drive, just like its loud exhaust, sounds good for a bit but then just gets to you.

The TT TDI is not slow 0-60 at 7.2 so will pop our bottom line 18i off at slower 7.6.

It means 5 valves per cylinder, 2 inlet and 3 exhaust so it was a 20 valve, 4 cylinder turbo

I have to say that if the 3.0 v6 in my wife's Audi is the benchmark then I would consider such an engine in the Z4 - but only with an Auto box.

If the only choice was a 2.0/4 pot petrol or a 3.0/v6 Diesel then the Diesel would get my vote. (Again with an Auto box) They (Audi) seem to do ok in Le Mans so it cant be all bad news.

I probably wouldnt as again i dont do the milage, my Z is purely a toy as i have a company car.

However i would love them to fit the 3L Triturbo in to a Z just to have a go!

376BHP and enough torque to pull a house down, while doing 50mpg..... sounds bloody reasonable to me so "Z4 SDrive50d" yes please! (though i wouldnt buy one, which kinda ruins the point!)

I wouldn't buy a deisel Z4 as the main reason for having it is the noise the straight 6 makes especially with the roof down.
I've only had mine since April, its my main car and I will be doing approx 20K per annum in it.
Its got reasonable mpg but looks magnificent and drives even better than it looks!
Its in Stratstone Derby at th emo for its free MOT and Service so got a diesel 1 series which drives really nicely and is super quiet but thats not why you buy a Z4 for.
Lookin gforward to 17:00 when I pick it back up.

I have a diesel engine in the Evoque and it suits the car well. Nice engine actually (although not a big diesel fan), but I would never buy a Z4 with a Diesel engine!! That just wouldn't be what I bought it for! I have never even thought of MPG when looking at sport style cars. Not what that type of car is about IMO.

Actually I wouldn't even buy a Z4 with the 4 cylinder petrol engine in! Straight six (or minimal V6) or nothing! :P

Some people can only afford a 4 cylinder engine Z4 and there's nothing wrong with that

A bit of an invidious comment I think :poke:

As surprising as it is to me some people aren't bothered about speed/power & are more happy with mpg/running costs as a priority, I agree it's each to thier own.
