No I dont do enough miles or long journeys to warrant a diesel.

I made sure my old 4x4 had a V8 in it...a 4 pot diesel would have never been up to the job for me!Breaker said:Actually I wouldn't even buy a Z4 with the 4 cylinder petrol engine in! Straight six (or minimal V6) or nothing!![]()

Some people can only afford a 4 cylinder engine Z4 and there's nothing wrong with that
A bit of an invidious comment I think![]()

Did I say anything bad about a 4cyl Z4? :?
Only a little fun from me BreakerBreaker said:LeeZ4MR said:I made sure my old 4x4 had a V8 in it...a 4 pot diesel would have never been up to the job for me!Breaker said:Actually I wouldn't even buy a Z4 with the 4 cylinder petrol engine in! Straight six (or minimal V6) or nothing!![]()

Blimey! people have got a bit touchy on here lately!
I don't have a Z4 now so probably time to move on.
That mirrors my thoughts on diesels very closely as my old 520d was a manual mated to a underpowered 4 pot & I hated it with a passion, yet the 330d was mated to an auto & at least had some poke & sounded a million times better than the 4 pot & I would recommend a 3.0 litre 6 pot diesel in a heartbeat.ronk said:Ok a manual with a diesel engine is a bit of a problem with its narrow power band but stick a decent auto box on the back and its fine. A 3.0 six with 250+bhp and 500Nm of torque along with 45/50mpg it cant all be bad news. Ok the sound might not be the same - but it can have that muscle car burble![]()

Like most, I thought diesels were for 4x4's or Taxis until we got a V6 3.0 TDI A4 - It has some grunt and the Auto box keeps everything on song. I can imagine what such a motor in a zed would be like.![]()

If they made one, would you buy a 4cylinder diesel Porsche 911?
Breaker said:next years Evoque should be quite a mover as they are fitting a new 9 speed auto box that they say will take almost 2 sec of the 0-62 time!

Breaker said:Actually performance wise a reasonable diesel would compare to the 1.8i, but why bother with the diesel?
BMW Z4 sDrive18i Roadster
CO2 emissions (g/km) 159.0
Combined (mpg) 41.5
Cylinders/valves per cylinder 4/4
Capacity (cc) 1997
Max output bhp 156
Max torque (Nm/rpm) 240/1250-4400
41.5 mpg
My Evoque engine is a 2.2 Diesel
190BHP
420 Nm of torque.
0-60 is 8.0sec (100kph: 8.5)
C02 is 169 g/km
44.1 mpg
I guess the Evoque style diesel engine in a lighter Z4 would probably give more performance than the 1997cc petrol as the torque is heading towards the 35is six, but running costs are almost the same (actually could be higher with the diesel because of fuel costs).
Looking at those figures you can probably see why BMW decided against a diesel Z4.
