Would you buy a Z4 Diesel if they made one

I know Le Mans has a big following on here but its boring. Oh look Audi has beaten Toyota/Peugeot again (delete as applicable). Hardly the pinnacle of Motorsport is it?

Looking at those figures you can probably see why BMW decided against a diesel Z4.

The SLK250CDI represents a better basis for comparison as it's a competitor.

If I was buying a 6er convertible I wouldn't think twice about buying the 640d variant.

A Z4 with the 640d engine and the ZF 8 speed auto would probably do around 4.5s on the 0-60.

Admittedly Le Mans can be boring to watch because of the nature of how long they are racing, but it can be a pinnacle in car design and engineering though as the engines and gear have to last a little longer than a few hours.

F1 is also like watching the M25 if you go watch it live! ;-)

I wonder if they have toyed with a diesel engine in F1? I guess it wouldn't suit the type of performance for the sport. More powerful electric hybrid's could be the next step.

Breaker hybrid next step lol, its already been around for few years going to double next year.. kers adding like 18i / 160 bhp on top of the engine by storing energy in bats so hybird or what, as the use is also doubled.

BUT dropping from the 2.4 V8 to 1.6 V6

Yes I know but that's just for short bursts of power. I wonder if that one day it will be reversed where a combustion engine is just used for extra HP. The electric bike race at the Isle of Man TT is getting to be quite a quick race now and they are all electric!

Have you heard the new BMW diesels? My goodnes there loud from the outside and vibrate like crazy.

Part of the pleasure of driving with the roof down is the sound.

You cant have a roadster or any convertible for that matter with a diesel engine. I wouldnt at least!

Thats not to say diesel's aren't fantastically capable engines, just in a roadster? Really?

I can tell you that my V6 diesel sounds a whole lot better than a 4 cylinder petrol engine

....at idle perhaps not :D

Your point being?

NO,... BUT, I was impressed yesterday in truro when an E whatever number, 330D took off and laid a bit of rubber on the smooth white bits of the pelican crossing, looked very torquey, quick and not smokey or smelly. When I first saw it from the front I thought m3 /5 ? .. but a zed diesel, i dont think so but hey , who thought an audi diesel would win at Le Mans. :o :driving:

It will be different to the BMW, that was all.

Yes indeed, but you stated that

Which I took as any manufacturer as you were unspecific in your statement, and I categorically refute that given the sound that my V6 makes, I will leave it up to my fellow forumites thats have had the straight six diesels to defend their honour :D

Well said sars! :D

If its only the sound that concerns folk then I'm sure acoustic engineers will be able to do something. BMW fitted sound generators didn't they?

I cant understand the objections to 3.0 petrol performance with better than 2.0 economy (if economy bothers you!) Diesels are not the smoking lumps they used to be.

Im really sorry if I have offended anyone and had I known it would hit such a nerve I would have not said it. I accept I should of being more specific and hence retract my statement.

Once again sorry to all those who took offence it was not my intention and shall be more careful in the future.

Cheers guys :)

Sars, are you coming to the yorkshire meet 22nd Sept? I'll see you there and you can dispel the myth :)

No I would not buy one. Nor any other Roadster, with one. At present, IMO they are not suited to this type of car, or to be more specific, to the way many people, my self included, like to drive this type of car. Roof down sunny day 8000 rpm, is where I enjoy the car most and I don't know of a production deisel that can provide, what people like me need/want from a roadster. Just my two peneth.
