Z3 project...no going back now!

Tbf, you could have written down anything and it's just your word against theirs. You have nothing to prove you didn't just mishear them.
A proper documented quote would have helped.
I'm not sure how you can keep back £1000 if you had nothing in writing?
Anyone could write down any figure they liked then 8 months later say that's what they said.
Given how prices have risen recently, did you not even confirm the figure with them when you dropped the car off?

As said, you can't prove your figure. However, neither can they. It's beyond belief they didn’t give you a written quote/email quote and have a copy.

Do you have the car back? If so you are in the stronger position, if not, they are.

Yes I know that and no I didn't confirm the price before they took the car, nor did they.
BUT....I know 100% that the figure I have is the one he quoted me. It is the most expensive item on the car, so I didn't get it wrong, or mishear. As I knew the figure, I presumed they did aswell.
There is not a chance I am paying for their lack of organisation, or forgetfulness, or whatever it was.
For all I know, as there is nothing in writing, they could have added the £1,000 to see if I would notice, or maybe not argue it. I hope that isn't the case, and actually don't believe it is.

The onus should be on them to make sure we all know where we stand when it comes to money, not me. They didn't supply anything in writing, ever, so can't complain when problems like this crop up.

They have fucked up my battery aswell; but that, apparently, is OK (according to them). I spent a lot of the day sorting the car out to get it started, which I shouldn't have needed to, if they had done as I asked and paid a tiny bit more attention. Luckily they are not far from me, otherwise it would have been much worse.

Car comes back tomorrow. I have paid them the money I owe (my figure) and it is sorted, hopefully. He said he would amend the invoice to deduct the £1,000.

They also gave me a date of first week in May to finish the car when it went in on March 27th. It will be 10th June tomorrow.

Just to say I have owned a business for over 30 years. I have NEVER had an issue like this with any customer, ever.
It is completely nuts IMO.

Good result in the end
Not really IMO. I am still paying what was agreed, no less. I now have to buy a new battery and spent most of today fucking about due to the destroyed battery. The car is 5 weeks over the agreed time period, aswell.

Today has destroyed any excitement I had about getting my beautifully painted car back TBH. :x

There we disagree. To me, when it's MY money I assume the onus is on ME to make sure both I and the other party know where we stand.

Keep it in perspective Andy. I can see why you are upset but the car looks stunning. I know it’s easy to say but you are going to end up with a very desirable car. In the end it has cost you an extra £200, which considering how much the whole project has cost you isn’t a fortune. We are all looking forward to seeing the end product.

Disagree all you want, but having owned a business for many years the onus is on the supplier to ensure there is no 'grey area', or 'open to interpretation' when it comes to contracts which involve money. Otherwise these situations arise.
He thinks he is £1,000 out of pocket, I know I have paid the correct amount. There are no winners here.

I struggle, Ian, as people's lack of care and organisation pisses me off. I get it every day with work, I don't need it with a 'hobby' aswell.

Then to really cap the day off, when I was telling 'the Duchess' about the issues, I inadvertently mentioned the amounts. She hit the roof! Presumably I forgot to mention the figures involved before.
So I also have a very grumpy wife aswell.

How have you owned a business for thirty years but still operate on word of mouth???
Honestly, by now you should know better .

Maybe you did mention them but she forgot to write them down

Now I really feel for you. I refer you to the wooden sign hanging in my kitchen: ‘ Happy wife, happy life’. Mind you Heather always seems to be a gentle soul. So there shouldn’t be any serious physical damage. I just hope you are going to be well enough to finish the job.🥲🥲🥲

Good job you're getting the car back, to be honest they could have been really awkward about it, stuck to their guns and refused to release the car pending payment on what they had quoted. It would have been intesesting if it gone to the small claims court who would have been favoured.

In hindsight I know but just ensure you always get a written quote on anything. I had some roofing work done last year and I was very casual about the quote etc, accepted a verbal quote when they came round the house which did then go up slightly as they were going along in doing the job. It then started to really play on my mind whislt the work was being done and I stated kicking myself that I didn't insist on a written quote from the off. Luckily the extra money over their original quote was only around 150 quid. The roofing company I used played on their work was guaranteed for 10 years but then wouldn't give me any sort of receipt for the work done, ask them 3 times and nothing. So if I wanted to test their guarantee and without a receipt they can simply turn round and say what work!

Too many shisters out there

Tim.

Many of these so called guarantees are virtually worthless. Even when written down. We had our roof stripped and recovered and retiled. The small company that did the job were excellent and I was very happy with their work. My next door neighbour was so impressed he had his done too. He received the same guarantee as we did. Fortunately we have not had any problems. My neighbour has not been so lucky. Six months after his roof was completed he had major issues. When he tried to contact the company for repairs he discovered that it had been wound up and the owner had retired. The guarantee proved to be not worth the paper it was written on.

At a much lesser amount, I had a written quote from the bodyshop to paint the aero skirts for the M, but when I came to drop them off, they doubled the price (yep, double) as they said that the (their) quote was wrong.

There are not many honest, trustworthy businesses around any more it seems.

At least they told you when you dropped them off, not when you picked them up!
