So what do you think of the new M2?

Sales have been really, REALLY bad. That's why there isn't even a sniff of a new model. It's been out the same length of time now as the E85 too. You see spy photos of a new model at least 18 months before it launches and we've seen nothing about a new Z4.

The only rumours (that haven't moved on for some time) were the collaboration with Toyota and the Z2 version - Love the look of the FT-1 concept.

[Edit: to add a pic - any excuse....]

I haven't seen much movement on that since 2014 so I would expect the lack of sales are driving down BMW's appetite for developing this further. Are Porsche/Mercedes sales also low at present - I would expect that those drivers that would have selected a new BMW 2-seater are now moving to the other marques with the choice disappearing?

Anyone excited? Appears to be akin to the M135 and looks like a hoot! smaller wheelbase, six speed manual with auto blip, 4.3 to 60.

Looks like a mental machine, and am slightly more excited about this than I was about the M3/4.

I think it genuinely looks great too, be interesting to see what the price point is!

Potential GT4 edition for the track, but glad they went with a coupe only bodyshell rather than the cab, hatchback etc etc. Looks a much better prospect than the a45 to me.

I'm not a fan personally. Going to be priced at £45k over here in the UK.

There's a nice thread about the M2 here:

Why oh why don't they make a new z4m... i bet they do in the new generation, must be due in the next 1-2 years. Z4 with a mix of M4 + M2 + M4 GTS parts... i'd be going to test drive it.

My reckoning is that they don't because of the general 'level' of hatches nowadays.

Think about it. with sales of two seaters down, the Z4M Would have to have ridiculous performance to keep above and beyond a much more practical hatchback or saloon. That means that it would be competing with higher end boxsters, caymans and fop flight mercs. Anything less and it would be a two seater M2, less practical, same or less performance, higher price tag.. But that won't come cheap, so it would have to be some feat to sell..I just can't see it being competitive if done to a budget, or being cheap if done as an engineering excercise, making it hard to place..

As for the M2, not sure it's ''my'' type of car, but that said, as a package, and looking at the thing, I love it from a distance. Much more excited about it than I was about the M3/M4 (I know it's supposed to be more affordable than the 5 and more practical than the 4, but I find it hard to see the point of the 4 door M3 personally)

Does anyone else find that the crazy performance being put out by all cars these days, plus the fact that every single series had an M whereas once upon a time it was the m3 and m5 only, means that M cars don't have the same allure they once did, or is it just me?

Z4M always did compete with the cayman / boxter high end models, i'd expect it to do the same (M4 engine / suspension, etc). I'd expect to be paying similar to M4 prices for one.

On your last point, yes - as my first post mentioned the chances are it wont be long before we get a 2M Active Tourer GT :D

The point of a new Z4M would not have been the profit on the model but the Halo effect of a full on M car in the Z4 Range.

But the Z4M competed with the 986/987 Boxter/Cayman - to get close to the 981 would be a big step for the E89 Platform.

I've been more surprised that there has not been an Alpina E89 as I think that would be a great GT car with quite a different feel to the 981- perhaps Alpina felt the 35is already offered this.

Looked at the Photos of the M2 and it does nothing for me and I loved the 1M straight away when it came out .

BMW called me today and asked me if i was interested in one at £42k...

Only available in 4 colours too....

Black, white, blue and grey...... No reds or Orange....

For my 2 penneth I like it, even the seats.
The only thing I don't like are the twin snow ploughs on the front bumper.

It looks fab to me and will be booking a test drive, it just depends if its 10K more fab than my M135i, it doesn't have much more poke.

Tim.

I like it. It's nice to see M cars at the £45k mark again. That always used to be their starting point. Looking forward to seeing some of the first-drive reviews now.

Of course the problem will be getting one, I think BMW are only releasing 700 units for the UK during 2016 and would imagine most build slots will be snapped up. If you can get one I doubt you will lose much in the first 12 months.

Tim.

As much as i liked the 2gt i rented.. eurgh the thought of it..

Re the cayman/boxster, i guess it did as far as price point and being a two seater sports car, but from a performance / handling pov it competed by not competing in a way ie being a raw exciting option as opposed to precise.. they cayman and boxster seem to be so accomplished now that i wonder if that wpproach would cut it, and if not if they could build something worthwhile in comparason

The new boxster and Cayman are beautiful cars...

But at low £40k's you are buying in at the base models, whereas you could get a limited run M car for the same money...it's faster, more exclusive and hold its value better....

Or buy a 4 yr old GTR or a F type Jag...

I quite like it, decent styling, nice press colour, good that they're producing limited numbers.
Really don't like the seats, they should have stuck with the M4 design ones.
Bit surprised that they've used that engine too and was expecting nearer to 400bhp.

I love it.

But if I had that sort of money, it'd be thrown to an e46 CSL.

Fair comparison? Probably not, but I'm really starting to believe that was one of BMW's last truly great cars.

wow - a 2GT actually exists? I was taking the p***

You thought that was bad .. what about the upcoming X2:

A lot of the negative comments here, about speed limits and there's no point in fast cars... does that strike anyone as hypocritical given the nature of this forum is about a particular sports car? Or perhaps it simply confirms what I've felt for some time, that most owners have the car for style over function.
