Best decision ever to have warranty in this case, otherwise it would have been just about a write off.

Depends which side of the fence you stand
If it wasn't under warranty its unlikely to have been there in the first place

It wouldn't be a write off..

Someone decent could fix it and that would be it..

Not throw components at it in the hope that it will run...

I fail to believe it's a coding issue... If it was why hasn't it been sorted??
What's taking weeks and weeks if it's a coding issue??

The initial fault they encountered was when following the book to fix the misfire. That calls for updating all of the software which they did. The car refused to take the updates and it went downhill from there. I guess I should stop saying coding and use the phrase software update.

What module failed to take software upgrade ? DME ?

But a second DME was fitted and this failed to update too ?

To be fair, if you've got their M4 hostage - i'd be quite happy waiting to get it fixed, it's then in their interests now.

Weren't you off on a road trip to Southern Italy soon? I would be.... :)

Or several track days 8)

They are specifically excluded on the policy, not that I checked

... as are trips to Germany.

Yep. I'm getting close to a sense of humour failure now. Just spoken with them and the 3rd DME is exhibiting the same fault. (It's refusing to be updated in the car). Next step is BMW are going to ship one pre-loaded with the right software and try again. That'll be the fourth unit.

I've asked their dealer principle to call me. If this one doesn't work I want them to either ship the car to BMW and start planning on giving me the retail value of the car against anything they might have in stock.

We're into the fifth week now...

I commend your patience mate, my "sense of humour" would be a dot in life's rear view mirror at this point. Good luck with everything.

If a pre-shipped unit would fix this particular issue, it does mean that your car would never be able to have any updates in the future as it would seem to brick it again.

That's the exact point I just made to BMW customer service. I'm tempted to insist that they do a full update with everything in the car before I take it back.

The call with customer service was fairly polite. I've made them aware that the car has been there over four weeks (I can't believe I just had to type that) and that while I'm not blaming Dick Lovett, I'd like an agreed action plan to get it resolved and that plan needs to include potentially taking it to Farnborough or Munich or giving me the retail value of the car against a replacement. Anything they can do to help will be gratefully received.

Cant they just leave the software update out?
If it worked before why update it?

Long story shortened, no. The box is semi generic across models I believe. Probably common with the E46 M3 and so without the right software loaded the car won't know what it is.

The bloody thing probably thinks it's a diesel still anyway!

The Z4M runs an MSS 70 DME...The E46 M3 runs an MSS54 DME...

The MSS 70 is unique to the E85/86 M IIRC......

Sorry what I meant was not having the newest software update.
It obviously ran before an update, can they not install older software?

Well lawks a mercy and love a duck! I have my car back!

The pre-programmed DME worked, and they had to do some work with it in the car to code it or link it to the car's immobilizer. They all believe it was their computer causing the issues.

Anyway, the car is running well. They've said it will take about 500 miles to settle down as the adaptive throttle learns my driving style and they want me to contact them once I've covered that mileage to confirm I'm happy. Certainly the rev drop as I pull to a halt has cleared up. Overall it feels like it's on top form, although after driving a succession of diesels that might be psychosomatic!

The paper trail was well over an inch thick in the file. The parts bill alone was £4500 although that's between BMW, Mondial and the dealer to sort out. Dick Lovett stopped charging labour to Mondial once the first DME replacement failed, again that's between themselves and BMW now.

So is the smile back on my face? Yes, but it won't take much to remove it again if the hesitation/rev drop comes back.

:driving:

Result......... :)

4th time lucky eh.....lol..

Or do you think that they have actually found what was wrong with it in the first place ?..

Either wa,glad to be back.......has the 997 thoughts now diminished ?
