My M had a few minor things to look at. I was waiting until the next service as nothing was really bad and then the offside rear spring let go so I book it on to get everything done on warranty. The list:
1) Replace rear o/s spring
2) Replace Passenger seatbelt that won't retract properly
3) investigate the standard M Misfire when you blip the throttle
4) Investigate rev drop/stalling as you brake to a halt
5) Investigate VANOS rattle when cold starting. (Minor but becoming more regular)

Monday
The tech saw both the misfire and rev drop when I took the car in so hopeful there won't be any of this "we couldn't reproduce the fault" and we agreed they could keep it overnight to see if the VANOS would rattle obligingly in the morning. They tell me the process for fixing the misfire is to update all the software first as that's been known to fix it. Others on here have reported the same so fair enough.

Tuesday
Get a call to say the airbag module is refusing to take the coding, and they cannot reset it. New module required, will come in tomorrow so keep the 116d (which is as s**t as it sounds) for another night.

Wednesday
To replace the airbag module, most of the interior of the car has to come out. They'll do the seatbelt as well. Job taking longer than expected, will be another night. Keep the hateful dog slow 116d for another night.

Thursday (today)
Get a call that the new module is also refusing to take the coding. Also the coding computer now thinks it's a diesel and is complaining it can't find the diesel engine management module ("no sh1t sherlock") and the car will no longer start. "Your car appears to be unraveling in front of us". FFS. Sigh. "OK what now?"

Oh and keep the b4stard 116d with glacial acceleration and fugly face for another night.

Tomorrow they hook it up to BMW directly across the internet and they'll recode it manually. I ask the natural question "What happens if they can't fix it?" Answer "We'll work with BMW to diagnose it". Isn't that what they've been doing already?

What's the betting the next call says my car got a virus on the internet? :headbang:

Let's hope when they do sort it and you get it back the weather is nice and you can have a nice trip home enjoying the beauty of your ///M

Good job you have a warranty. What would this all cost without ?

Hope you get it sorted Stu

The 2 items that needed replacing are pretty routine , the problem's have arisen from looking into "faults " that may not even exist or that other M drivers have but aren't even aware they have :? quirks of the car ?
Nice to have the waranty though as long as it comes back sorted & with no further glitches

Very true Andy, and to be honest they bricked the module so should sort it regardless of Warranty

The misfire is quite common, and mine even stalled when reversing the other day... Mine is no longer low mileage... And nor is Stu's now, relatively speaking a he's been driving it properly :driving:

Nightmare, like Jimbo says though - having driven around in the 116d you will appreciate the Zed even more.

As of Wednesday the bill was at £1400, although I'd be disputing the charge for any modules, they broke it, they fix it

The 116d may be boring and slow but think of the mpg....

Hope it all gets sorted....

The other loan car I have (because my S-Max is still being rebuilt 6 weeks after being damaged by a post office van while parked) is a 2.0 Passat estate that does at least 5mpg more. Effortless compared to the 116d in which you have to put your foot to the floor to get it to do anything more than an asthmatic jog

What a nightmare. It doesnt offer much confidence but I hope it all works out fairly soon.
Who is the garage ?

Dick Lovett BMW. I'm not blaming them or their technician, it looks like an issue with the coding system they use that may have received an incorrect download.

It's now been recoded successfully but the immobiliser is still refusing to allow the car to be started. What a PITA this is. Still, when I come to sell (possibly soon) at least I know it will all be fully up to date and no faults!

ask to swap the 116d (which my friend had once, and also said it was terrible) for an extended test of the new M4, or a 4series coupe.
