If it doesn't put a smile back on my face when it comes back I'm going to sell it and buy a 911
Do you reallly, really, really want to turn into PVR?

Something to strive for ....

They will fix it stuart...

There is nothing massively complex about the car... Just usually main dealer techs can be a bit numb on the older stuff..

Tell them to print off what the codes are for the car and I will have a look over them if you want..

We fix cars for local main dealers when they have lost there way with them..

Just got off the phone with the dealer principle. I refrained from shouting and he's off to look into it. Also to look into my request to find me a more suitable replacement for an M car than a 318d touring M sport. At least it has all the toys in it.

Thanks, but BMW are connected to it remotely and talking to their master tech it sounds to me like maybe the replacement DME is faulty, possibly blown by the same thing that blew the first one.

There's an initialisation process the car goes through. They tell me that the first sequence works, then a pin on the DME is supposed to ground out triggering relays to apply more voltages to the DME and powering up other parts of the system. All the signals to the DME are happening but the pin doesn't go to earth so the relays don't trigger and nothing happens. Same problem with the original DME. So either they've missed something and it's not actually initialising properly, or this DME has the same fault as the previous one. Either way, dead car

Are they saying the relay is internal or external of the DME?

I can honestly say that in 20 years I have only ever replaced maybe 5 ECU's ..

And it generally due to another component damaging it or water damage..

They will have DME pin data for all wiring at all key positions and non start/ crank engine status.so fault will not be difficult to track...

It still sounds to me like the car had been cross poled or jump started and caused a wiring or component issue..

He didn't say if it was internal or external, but my guess would be external. He did say pin 15 if that means anything to you?

Pin 15 of the DME ?

Im not at work now so have no reference, but will have a look what the status of pin15 is when i get a minute...

This sucks! glad you poked about the courtesy car, hope they sort you out with something more inspiring.

What 911 would you get? :) i shouldnt ask.. there is already a thread on this debate...

Have they tried turning it off and on again? :D 10+ years into my technical career and i know that works, for a fact.

Best of luck.

I've been offered a 997.1 C2S by a friend. It's had all the horror story stuff done. It's had a ceramic IMS bearing replacement, new RMS, new aircon condensers and shields fitted to protect the new ones and a ton of other stuff

I was looking at approved used 997.2 C2S but my friends would be half the price and no need to raid the savings. The longer this saga goes on, the more I feel like changing.

Would you mind passing me your pals contact details if you don't go for it mr T :P That sounds like a loved car & a 997 is most definitely on my "to do" list :driving:

997.1 with a full Hartech rebuild inc new liners would be a good car to own..

Bet thats north of £25k...

Sounds reasonable...

A good engine rebuild is 10k so with that being already sorted then it will be a reliable car..

If you was ever going to jump and you want a 997,then it could be the one to go for..

Today's update. They've gone back to basics as BMW have asked them to repeat the wire check. Apparently this means they are checking the signals on all inputs into the DME. Something they did when they (and BMW) decided the original DME was faulty.

I am now crouched on the floor, rocking gently backwards and forwards. *wibble*

We're now into week 3...
