Rant

I know this must be horribly frustrating and hopefully you'll get out of this with all works completely covered by warranty.

However, I think it shows why so many people are using specialists for Z4M servicing now. As Z4M-2006 mentioned earlier, main dealers just aren't adept to dealing to older models. When I find my way back into a Z4MC, I will be favouring cars recently serviced and maintained at a reputable specialist over main dealer.

What happened with your courtesy car, are they giving you something more appropriate now?

I think in this instance, it makes no difference that it's a main dealer, with the possible upside that BMW themselves are now working on the car. That wouldn't happen with an indie. I don't disagree that a good indie is more concerned with their reputation and is often an enthusiast. Some though, like Munich Legends have acquired a reputation for being just as expensive and no better.

Anyway today's update: BMW are taking over tomorrow. They've asked Lovett to disconnect the battery overnight to reset everything and then reconnect it in the morning and their technical team will connect remotely.

A cynic might think "you're turning it off and on again"...

I would be very pleased that the dealer would have it with all the back up of R&D and a massive organisation behind it.

Indy Joe Blogs under the arches would just be scratching his head, prepare a huge bill and not get anywhere most likely.

If a good old fashioned Z4 can cause this much trouble I hate to think what could happen to a newer car.

Hope you get it sorted what a nightmare - I had an ECU replaced on A Discovery 3 once - car was off the road for a fortnight until they got is sorted - changed everything else out before finally going for the ECU- that was a faulty clock spring that fired an error message to the ECU - result car self selected cruise and started to accelerate to last saved cruise setting - which was not good. So I sympathise got given a Zafira hire car for the first couple of days until I got a Disco 4HSE for the remaining time.

All the best - 997s can be great - but yours is a lovely looking M and I'm sure they will get it sorted eventually

Having said that, a Porsche cruise in the Cotswolds would be good

Today's update. After "turning it off and on again" by removing the battery overnight, BMW has come to the conclusion that whatever blew the original DME blew the replacement up so.... they're fitting another DME. I asked if they knew what blew them and they "think" it's their coding system so the plan is to fit this one to the car, then have BMW code it remotely.

Fans of this page will note that they've done this once already (although after the dealer had tried so I guess it will eliminate their coding system breaking it)

If not? Well the definition of stupidity is doing the same thing over and over and expecting a different result...

Oh, and the DME second replacement will probably take 2-3 days to come in. And they're a £1000 part so the bill for this little fault is going to be epic. Not that I'm paying.

I told them on day 1 of the problems that it had an Intravee and they might want to disconnect it before trying again. They told me it was highly unlikely to be causing a problem, plus they've coded the car before with it fitted. I *think* they've unplugged it anyway.

Loading software into a DME will not blow it up...... You just load a file into the DME memory, its like loading facebook on your phone...lol..

The software could be corrupt,so can brick the DME..... But the software that will be remotely loaded will only be the same software (it has to be)..

I realise this doesnt help Stuart... but i find it amazing what they are telling you..
