Rant

The extra cash would always be useful for him by downgrading to an older car

Don't blame you for getting wound up over this, who wouldn't. I hope it get resolved quickly in your favour.

However nice to see you back on the forum, seems like a while.

Coding the modules on the M is a doddle on the platform it uses...

I can't understand why they where messing with the airbag module ? Unless they tried to completely upgrade the software in the modules individually..?

Either the software is corrupt... Doubtful with it being at BMW and it being years old, not exactly software under development so to expect glitches..

Or the battery has gone flat whilst working on the car and they have jump started it and bricked a load of modules..( likely)
Because they are pretty dumb..

We flash modules daily....it's easy and 99% cast iron and effective.

For so many things to go wrong at once, something has happened...

Part of their diagnostic process flow for the stutter on blipping the accelerator is to make sure all the software is up to date. If they're updating they'll do the whole car. The process is that their computer interrogates the car, checks all the existing software levels and downloads updates for anything that needs it.

Something went wrong and it bricked the airbag module, immobiliser and apparently now the DME. They've got a DME in order and I've asked them to borrow their M3 demonstrator. Let's see what happens next. 8 days and counting...

I can assure you that they wouldnt upgrade the complete car unless they needed too....

They could end up in a world of poo for no good reason if the modules bricked upon software upgrade... Which im guess is what they are telling you has happened... So its going to cost them thousands.. This just isnt in BMW's remit,They want minimum work maximum cash.

Of course i could see why they would want the DME on the latest software... This could sort your issue, the other modules have no relevance to your fault at all..

Some cars like the E60 run chain software upgrades.. You cant just put the software into one module,it has to be done to all modules in a chain. This caused so many problems and took so much time (upto 10 hours) that it got scrapped...

But your Z isnt like that anyway....

They may have tried to get the modules onto the latest software to try and write out the faults that have been created.....

I'm beginning to get the impression BMW are wriggling on the claim. I've just been asked to scan and send a copy of the service history for the car. Thankfully it's all up to date and serviced by one dealer (Dick Lovett) since I've owned it.

DME not expected until the end of the week. That'll be two weeks instead of two days. Assuming this particular electronics box actually fixes it...

Ho hum. I'm losing the will to live with the bloody thing.

I thought that before you bought it that it had missed a service?

Was wondering when this thread would appear..!

What did they say about the M3 request Stu?

Did you ask them why they wanted the service history?

Surely they have it logged anyway if they did it!

Best of luck.

By time, yes. By miles, not even close. It only had 6000 miles on the clock. I had a conversation with BMW and Sytner about it and the deal was Sytner did an out of cycle inspection II on it, at which point BMW approved it for a full AUC warranty. Since then it's had another oil service on miles, and a brake fluid change on the 2yr timeline.

It'll be due an Inspection I in about 2,500 miles.

Interestingly, Sytner supplied the Inspection II invoice to me as proof it was done today. Their internal cost is fully disclosed!

It was less than £700

Well, I'm at my wits end with this car. Two weeks in and still no sign of ever getting it back. They now have a group master technician working on it with remote support from BMW. The DME came in, was fitted, made no difference. It won't even start.

The whole thing has become a nightmare. If the faults it went in for aren't fixed after all this crap I have no idea what I'll do next other than maybe lawyer up. The long and the short of it is, they broke my car. I'll put a call into the dealer principle later on, but only for the satisfaction of having a moan and a honk at him.

All the joy of owning one of these has gone. If it doesn't put a smile back on my face when it comes back I'm going to sell it and buy a 911

Do you reallly, really, really want to turn into PVR?

Try not to lose faith Stuart. Know its easy for me to say but the fact of the matter is, they have to sort it out to you approval and it will return in hopefully better shape than ever. Once you're back behind the wheel and everything's gravy again I'm sure you'll see the light :)
