Ok cool i will bare that in mind. But £60........ might have to be a bit more than that buddy. Or i wont be getting much of an M!!

I'd throw in a twix?

(but yeah lol.. obviously a bit more :P)

Well i will get it back together and hopefully fall in love with it again.

To be honest, however fast it goes - you get used to it. All that's happening now is im used to the speed, and i'm trying to drive it faster safely round country lanes, perform tidy turns and get the shifts lined up for a smooth/fast drive.

When you get an ///M you're just constantly looking at Vantage V12's and wishing you could afford it. lol. It never ends...

It was not level but i was extremely careful getting the diff out. The cradle is still on the car but i am taking that out to replace the bushes. Gave up on Saturday and we had plans to see friends. But the handbrake cables run through the cradle. And it looks like i need to take the exhaust off to slacken the cables enough. Thats not a problem as i plan on doing some work on the exhaust any way. The problem is i only have 2 axle stands so i need to get 2 more to lift the front to get the exhaust off. Its defiantly going to take longer than i thought but theses things always do!! Just hope its ready for some track days.

The handbrake cables are really easy once you know the "trick".

1st - Spray some silicon spray into the handbrake cable guides/tubes on the diff cradle to make the rubber casing slide easier.
2nd - Pull the cables so the cable pops out of the center hand brake piece (where the two cables come together under the tunnel). This frees the cable to move "back" further than it otherwise can.
3rd - Push the cable (from the wheel side) through the diff cradle, don't try to pull it (from the propshaft side). If you try to pull it (from the propshaft side), the cable is trying to straighten out and will bind. But if you push it (from the wheel side), it just slips right out.

Unless you have a cradle bushing tool, the best way to get the old bushings out is to burn them out (I use oxy/acetylene but MAP gas should work). Just light them up and let them burn (make sure you have a pan under the cradle to catch the nastiness that will result) till all the rubber is gone (keep hitting it with the torch as need be). At first it will be slow to burn, but once the rubber really gets going it puts on quite a show! Once all the rubber is burned out, clean with some simple green.

Having problems getting the exhaust off!! It's very corroded and not really anything left to get a spanner or socket on. As it's on stands I can get under with a drill or grinder :headbang: I have slack on the cable if only I could get it out of the hub part!!

Hob part? Do you mean where the cable goes through the trailing arm (to connect to the e-brake shoes)? I seem to remember those being tight. Get some penetrating oil spray and really soak it. Then you can try grabbing the metal "end cap" part of the cable with a pair of pliers and turning it. That would crack any rust lose and let it come out. Just be careful not to rip the cable housing.

I hate old exhaust bolts! More often than not they I end up having to cut old bolts off with a torch (or cutting wheel).

Exactly what I kent just of to try.

I will replace the bolts once I can drive it to my brothers 2 post lift! Should have done the job there

Thanks again.

If your breaking ill have the 3L lump

Bidding war on the bits please to put me in an M

Surly you will need the coilovers and LSD JE???

We will have to wait and see. As jimmy rightly said I will want something more powerful in time.

Small victory handbrake cables are out. A big thank you to v8z4 thanks buddy  also striped out the upper control arm one side just going to strip the other side.

Right it's about time but it's all striped out and I feel like a hero :) I do honestly feel very proud of myself!

Now it's time to strip clean paint and see if I can put it all back together

Glad my suggestions worked out.

They really helped. I ended up using a length of 10mm round steel and tapping it through. I just couldn't grip if from the back.

That was going to be my next suggestion.

What about finding an S54 from a wrecked E46 M3? From what I understand, the Z4M and 3.0 Z4 both use the same 6 speed trans.

Just a few pictures of the car stripped ready for cleaning tonight and painting the flowing evening.

And all the bits taken out and the new bushes to go in.

I think, without doubt, this thread should win "manliest thread of the year".
Nothing better than coming in from a cold, rainy morning, to a thread full of hard car pornography

I've used that can of wd40! i'm famous!

Best of luck getting it done MM - i think it'l be incredible to drive when finished.

 Ha ha thanks Ian i am not the first to do it Yorkie Z was that man. And he has been a great help to. So the manly points really are his and v8z4.

Yes you did Jimmy and yes you are!! I do hope so also i will be looking in to the option of s54 swap at some point. It might be cheaper than the S/C????? :o
