Right having a nightmare getting the diff out :headbang: it's do close but stuck on something and I can see what!! Anyone got any pointers???

Did you have the car level? I found that if the car was not level, the cradle binds on the long studs (the front cradle mounts). You said you got it out, but now you need to check the studs as they are surprisingly easy to bend. If they are at all bent, they will cause all kinds of fits getting the cradle back in, not to mention could shift the cradle out of center.

It was not level but i was extremely careful getting the diff out. The cradle is still on the car but i am taking that out to replace the bushes. Gave up on Saturday and we had plans to see friends. But the handbrake cables run through the cradle. And it looks like i need to take the exhaust off to slacken the cables enough. Thats not a problem as i plan on doing some work on the exhaust any way. The problem is i only have 2 axle stands so i need to get 2 more to lift the front to get the exhaust off. Its defiantly going to take longer than i thought but theses things always do!! Just hope its ready for some track days.

Thanks buddy i think i will buy another set they are handy. Is your back ok to be under cars????

I think with time and a bit of research looking on line i will muddle through it. If you want to pop down your always welcome Luke.

The handbrake cables are really easy once you know the "trick".

1st - Spray some silicon spray into the handbrake cable guides/tubes on the diff cradle to make the rubber casing slide easier.
2nd - Pull the cables so the cable pops out of the center hand brake piece (where the two cables come together under the tunnel). This frees the cable to move "back" further than it otherwise can.
3rd - Push the cable (from the wheel side) through the diff cradle, don't try to pull it (from the propshaft side). If you try to pull it (from the propshaft side), the cable is trying to straighten out and will bind. But if you push it (from the wheel side), it just slips right out.

Unless you have a cradle bushing tool, the best way to get the old bushings out is to burn them out (I use oxy/acetylene but MAP gas should work). Just light them up and let them burn (make sure you have a pan under the cradle to catch the nastiness that will result) till all the rubber is gone (keep hitting it with the torch as need be). At first it will be slow to burn, but once the rubber really gets going it puts on quite a show! Once all the rubber is burned out, clean with some simple green.

:)

Thanks Chris that's loads of help and nakes a lot of sense
To gain access the the handbrake end I need to get the exhaust off right?

I don't have bush tool as such!! But I do have a massive g clamp and a bearing puller. And if that fails a big fly press at work I am sure I could use.

As I am asking questions...... How do I get the half shafts out the diff not really looked closely do they just pull tap out? Or are there circlips?

Removing the exhaust would certainly make getting to the handbrake easier (might be doable with it on but I personally always drop the exhaust).

Use the press. The center of the bushing will likely rip out leaving the outside if you try to do it with the bearing puller or clamp. The press will just push the old ones right out and make installing the new ones really easy. Are you using poly bushings? If so, coat the bushing with anti seize. It makes installation easy and eliminates all squeaks.

Do you mean the half shafts out of the center section (diff) or the spindle hubs?

I think I need to get or borrow (shouldn't be a problem) another set of axle stands and get the car up. And get the exhaust off.

I think the press will be the way forward. Just going meyle with the bushes. They are all brought and waiting.

Actually out of the diff the bits drive axles bolt too.

They just bolt to the diff (no clips/rings/etc.). Only "trick" is you need an external torx (think it's an E12) to remove the bolts (don't try to make another type of socket work as you won't get the bolts off and it will destroy the bolt head).

Yeah I have them off had to buy the tools.

I actually have them off I need to get them out the diff. So I can get the LSD in. I am having tonight off back to it tomorrow. I am sure it will become obvious.
