Wraps (for sixspeed especially)

Been thinking about getting my car wrapped in matt black for a while now. Getting to 2 years old (next month) and i've never had a car this long. Ever.

I don't want to sell it, as i love it and the market sucks right now. Also what else would i replace it with?

Anyway i found a company that can do it and they have done this....

Andy, i think you've inspired someone here - unless of course your car is interlagos and you're just a fraud!

What do you call think of wraps? I like it and if i decide i don't after a while, hey presto the wrap is removed and the paint is protected underneath.

Personally I think you'll ruin the look of your car with a wrap but if your desperate for a change then it's the easiest way to do it without getting a new car. I'm pretty sure though that the paint won't be particularly protected by the wrap and that the removal of the wrap will leave your paintwork damaged. I've read of resprays being necessary after removal.

I am like you and have fancied a matt black wrap for a long time, but as dgm says there is a high chance that when the wrap comes off your paintwork is scratched or damaged. None of the fitters offer any guarantees and anyway, will they still be around when you come to take it off?

I like the idea still, just can't quite seem to do it.

I'm sorry but what exactly is a car wrap? The pictures on your link don't really help.

They advertise the wrap to last 3-5 years but my concern would be how the car would actually look like in 3 years. Is the vinyl thick? How does it hod up to stone chips?

I was contemplating vinyl wrapping my chin spoiler like seen with sixspeed's (although I think his was painted). The local installer couldn't recommend it because that area would be tattered at around 15k miles. He recommended that I paint it instead.

I've just had the front and rear spoilers wrapped by Totally Dynamic. Cost £80 which is a lot less than painting the areas. The vinyl is very thin so it will only protect paint up to a point. As for looking tatty after 15k miles, well I would expect a black paint job to look pretty battered after that time as well.

It would be a great mod for someone with a coupe in white or silver or even red who wanted the c.f roof look of Sixspeed without the cost!!

I like the idea of a wrap but I don't think I could go through with it...I would like a classic martini style (early 80's Lancia Rally Style) Zed - but I would look like a pratt in it...

Ah Rabman, a wrap is a made to order vinyl covering that changes the look of a car (or anything else for that matter). All NASCARs etc are wrapped which is how they made the sponser's logos look so nice and perfect and yet they manage to change the whole look as sponser come and go. The white, sixspeed lookalike car could be red underneath or any other colour for that matter.

The problems are that it's thin plastic and so will become damaged over time and that it have a useful life of between 3-6 years depending on weather etc. It's a fun way to totally change your car's apprearance but has it's issues.

Thanks for the explanation. I understand why NASCAR would use this to apply sponsor's logos and such, but it doesn't seem the ideal way to change the color of a car, especially if it gets tattered.

I have also looked into it and Raccoon. Can do it for about £1500.

I have been told that it will NOT damage the paint and when you don't want it anymore just peel off and polish the car.

I think it still looks the nuts I know a few people have had it done, but it's hardly been done to death. :?

Yup i like it to. MMM food for thought i guess.

Ali - it may have been done to death up in sheepland but i have yet to see a matt car anywhere in the Central Belt. I was thinking Matt Black, maybe with a gloss viper strip of sorts. I'd have to play with some software to see what to make of it.

Good timing ! Got this last Thursday from Totally Dynamic (Erdington, Birmingham ) :

"Many thanks for your enquiry.

We would charge £800 for a full wrap in Matt Black and also £85 for the roof to be done in a carbon effect wrap. The vinyl has a 7 year life and should you decide on a change before that, the material can be removed without damaging the paintwork underneath.

Should you require any further information at this point please feel free to contact me. "

Thats from the managing director, 7 year life, no damage to paintwork.....
I had to ask about the carbon effect roof.... might give it a punt.

That looks awsome, love those wide arches and the front bumper, what/who are they? lol

It's the BMW Motorsport kit - available to anyone who wants to buy them from BMW Motorsport. Although you'll probably find they're not as hard-wearing as you'd like, are not particularly cheap, and will create lots of 'tizzing' in the cabin.
