I can tell you that my V6 diesel sounds a whole lot better than a 4 cylinder petrol engine

....at idle perhaps not :D

It will be different to the BMW, that was all.

Yes indeed, but you stated that

You cant have a roadster or any convertible for that matter with a diesel engine. I wouldnt at least!

Thats not to say diesel's aren't fantastically capable engines, just in a roadster? Really?

Which I took as any manufacturer as you were unspecific in your statement, and I categorically refute that given the sound that my V6 makes, I will leave it up to my fellow forumites thats have had the straight six diesels to defend their honour :D

Im really sorry if I have offended anyone and had I known it would hit such a nerve I would have not said it. I accept I should of being more specific and hence retract my statement.

Once again sorry to all those who took offence it was not my intention and shall be more careful in the future.

Cheers guys :)

Sars, are you coming to the yorkshire meet 22nd Sept? I'll see you there and you can dispel the myth :)

Hey Atom1.....chill honey you haven't upset anyone, this is usual forum banter

....and tentatively yes, oh and I did record the sound of my diesel this morning with the roof down, but alas after hitting 60 all you can hear is wind noise....and not from me I might add, but if i can figure out how to post a sound recording I will

Which standard production BMW engines have a redline at 8k ? :o

I have been known to hit the limiter in Fourth. I try not to make a habit of it though.

I think you probably got the gist of my post, so I won't re iterate.

I understand - and also appreciate the sound of loads of rpm's. In my youth many years ago, I had a full race 999 cooper s. - It had a redline of 8.5k with the occasional 9.2K

It was!
Splutter Splutter off the cam then at 4.5 k it came on strong up to 6.5k - then some more. 100BHP/Litre and in those days that was going something. It was my road car! :D
You see, boy racers are not a new thing!

Current diesels still belch out a fart of black smoke when the person driving it floors the accelerator. It's just not so big that the person driving can see it in their rear view mirror but its there alright, as is the extremely short power band from 2000-under 5000rpm.

If you do loads of miles I can see the advantage but after my Merc C220CDI I swore I'd never own another diesel. I've also driven plenty of BMW and Audi diesels in recent years and they haven't changed my mind!

The short power band is all sorted out by an auto box! As for the poof of smoke , It only happens after pottering to clear the tubes - and who cares anyway?

As long as the lump under the bonnet gives a load of grunt I don't care if its powered by chip fat or petrol!

My old celica 190 went from 140bhp to 190 at 6 to 9K way manic and fun. only allowed the lift when warm, it would cut the power at 6K, caught me out a few times.

SLK250 CDI AMG Sport 56mpg 0-62 6.7 secs 2.1 in line 4 pot twin turbo.... very interesting

This is very uncool when you see it. I'm not sure what is less cool - the guy in front with his Cayenne belching out smoke, or me in the 2.5si having to make an unnecessarily loud (albeit glorious) noise to keep up with him.

Just spotted this post on Twitter by Harry Metcalf, re-posted by Tiff Needell.

At BMW i8 workshop today & asked why original concept diesel engine got dropped. "Because a sports car can't be diesel powered" (Tiff) Amen to that!
