What's the book value of a 150k mile Z4MC...

well this is your opertunity to get into a lower mileage M then
That's part of the reason I'd like mine fixed.

I've had mine from 2 years & 9000 miles old (so for 140,000 miles) and know what I've done to maintain it - including the over-servicing on oil & brake fluid changes, decent tyres & pads, shim measurements, etc., and I personally know/trust the monkey who's been maintaining it for the last 50,000 miles.

Any other/younger/newer car may be a mixed blessing, assuming I can afford anything on the market with the write off value I'd get.

An issue with lower mileage one is that it won't have had (or needed to have) many of the wear & tear items replaced that mine has, so I'd be facing those huge bills not far along the road.

Just this year I'm thinking of my £1500 cooling system overhaul, £3k suspension overhaul, £2k clutch & flywheel replacement, etc. Don't fancy spending £12k on a car to have to spend £6k to get it to the same mechanical condition as mine was.

Unfortunately, none of that will make one iota of difference to an insurance valuation - hence the wish for it to be repaired.

Anyway, don't you a dodgy-coloured spare I can have cheap :poke:

I do have a spare but I know it would not be good enough for you, its got 1 of those strange ugly roofs

Hope you do get your car repaired, or if not,do get yourself into another lovely M coupe, buy yours back for salvage and take the good stuff that is undamaged to put on a lower mileage one :D

Hopefully he's just busy picking out the replacement, but unfortunately I doubt it.
Probably arguing with the insurers who are valuing it at whatever fuel was left in the tank :-(

any news?? longest decision ever it seems!!
Sorry, not died, killed myself, gone off in a huff, or done a Johnny Essex...

I did say I would only update it when I had an update, and until today I had nothing to update.

However, I am live posting this as I am currently on hold with the insurer as I have had no contact from them for 2 weeks, but when I spoke to the garage they said it was 50:50 on being written off.

If it is indeed too close to call, then I suggested that I would happily increase my excess to bring the repair cost below the write-off level.

Been through to 3 queues, to 3 departments so far, and am currently talking to the 4th, and hopefully final, department that is dealing with my claim who have put me on hold to check with the engineer who is assessing the claim...hold on...

...BREAKING NEWS...
the insurer engineer was awaiting a confirmation from the garage that their alignment systems could work with my aftermarket suspension, and they now have that, so the approval for repairs will be done today or tomorrow

Just got to arrange to pick up the 0.1L courtesy car now and hope the Christmas break doesn't hamper the repair effort too much as I don't fancy doing my 500 mile weekly round trips in something that takes the whole of the M6 to overtake a truck.

Also had time to have a ponder over the last couple of weeks, and think I have decided to get a 2nd, disposable car (something like any old 150bhp turbo diesel hatch/saloon) to use as the daily driver, and will put the Z (mine or another) on a limited mileage policy.

very happy for you and the car, no way did it deserve to be written off for that!!!

very pleased for you and the car mechanically is probably every bit as good as any of the low mile cars.

That really is great news and what a relief
Definitely, and will make my Christmas very happy

Just got to organise insurance as ran out on 6th Dec and the current insurer wouldn't quote until I had clarity on the repair/write-off, and then take it back off SORN when I get it back. Will also look around for agreed value, limited mileage policies to see how cheaply I can keep it on the road/track.

Great news indeed and considering the damage compared to the two that got written off recently very surprising.

How much extra excess did you have to offer?

That's great news. Glad its all come good. Should be back on the road in no time.

It just goes to show that depending on where the car is taken and who is assessing and the costs involved it can mean that a car that might not be written off if taken to a reputable garage. It would seem that when you elect to take it to the local BMW garage then you run the risk of it being written off due to the costs involved.

When I had to have my E88 sorted I elected to take it to one of the 'Approved' garages, they have a set hourly rate for the insurance company which was half of what they would normally charge. Guys had a very good reputation from others on PH for work done out of their own pockets and it turned out that the local BMW dealer farmed out their work to the lowest bidder and there was no guarantee that the standard would be that great and it would have cost 3 times as much.

At the end of the day, the garage did a cracking job and used all BMW parts and my insurance company guaranteed the work for 5 years.....not sure a BMW garage would have offered that.

just catching up with this...

bummer that it happened in the first place, but glad to hear it's gonna be repaired :D

I'm hoping that the fact that I was with a specialist insurer rather than the cheapest one from a comparison site, and the car had lots of original options, quality aftermarket parts, and recent OE replacements (diff, clutch & flywheel, cooling pack, etc.) meant that they thought they'd have to offer me a good wedge for me to be able to buy a car in a similar condition (assuming that most other Z4MCs have not had that £5k of work done this year) and so took the cheaper option.

The CAP/Glass guide prices are a joke, as mine was valued at £5k (assuming it was a 2007 car), which would have meant it would have been written off for about £2k or work (i.e. just the parts prices for the wings & door).

Book prices for an average mileage (which mine obviously isn't) coupe were about £2k more than for the similarly specced roadster.

I made a cheeky offer of adding another £1000, but it wasn't considered/accepted as they just said the repair was being approved anyway.

I'm hoping that most of the repairs are cosmetic, but even if they find (any/further) suspension/chassis damage I don't think they can then back out of the repair as they'll have to pay for everything they've already had done.

Sounds like good news overall, Tony. That's the thing about your own car - you really do know all about it so keeping it if possible was the right answer - good result.

That's even better that you didn't have to pay out anymore.

I will review my insurance when it's due and look into agreed values I think.

i got an agreed value from reis of 36k.... had to provide a LOT of receipts and pictures of the cars condition to get to that figure, was very happy with it in the end however.

Great news Tony. Really happy it has turned out like this.

It will be like getting a new car again after driving about in a 1.0 insurance mobile. :D

I havent got the courtesy car yet, as the garage wouldnt drop one off without me there to sign for it, as as I needed it for work & visiting friends over the last couple of week I decided to hire a car instead. Ended up with a Seat Leon FR TDI, which is great for the motorway slog and returning 55mpg in similar driving conditions/style to my Zed :P

My man maths even worked out that the fuel saving of not using the Zed would almost pay for one on a 2 year lease.

Glad you are on the way to a solution you're happy with on the coupe

Now what about a 55plate 120d Sport 97k for a daily beater ?
Just happen to have one sat in garage looking for a new home
