What have you done to your car today?

Partner’s car, project shoestring..

Has now gone from having a broken Diff, broken roof, shot rear brakes…

…to being a functioning daily driver, with a working roof (thanks Alan  ) and an advisory free MOT pass this morning.

Happy days & happy Mrs

Not looking too shabby for a shoestring. Well done

I’m going to give it a full machine polish & correction, but mainly focused on getting it mechanically sorted so far

Used a drill attachment with a buffing sponge and 3M Finnese-it to polish my headlights. Massive improvement! Car is tucked up in my garage but will post photos tomorrow.

Very pleased with the result.

You need to use a UV sealant on it afterwards or the sun will discolour it again rapidly.

i bought a cheap polisher off aldi but people are saying it spins too fast and to only use it on speed 1 otherwise friction will burn the paint. i now plan on just using it for waxing the car after a clay bar. i think clay is enough to sort out the minor issue of stuff stuck to the car. the paint i'm not overly bothered about. i may invest in a proper DA polisher in future but it's probably better off just spending the few quid extra and getting it professionally done. polishers aren't cheap the decent ones and you normally need 2 of them as well to do the smaller parts.

On what basis is it better off spending a few extra quid to pay a professional?

I’ve got two machines and have corrected many cars, I’d have spent a fortune paying a professional to do them and missed out on the satisfaction of doing it myself.

Had the car go in for a replacement hand brake unit (worn ratchet) and a parking sensor bleeper speaker thingy. Now I can reverse park without leaving a gap half the length of the parking space.

Out of curiosity, if you don't mind me asking, what did the handbrake repair cost you? My handbrake works fine most of the time but a lot of the time I need to give it a good wrench upwards a bit as it starts slowly creeping/moving on hills.

I bought two used hand brake mechs. One from a great guy on this forum and another from a breaker on FB.
Didn't want to risk it so compared the two and used the best one. Actually both were pretty much equally in good condition. They did have slightly different springs despite both coming from E85s. One looked newer. Might sell the unused one or keep for rainy day as unit is on back order.

One was £120 the other £150. (New, £400).
Total repair bill including the parking sensor thingy, labour etc, was £250. So, around 400 all in if I sell the surplus unit.

The teeth on mine were gone in the middle, sounds like you have worn unit too. Can lead to an MOT failure.

Low milage car. Previous owner must have rode the ratchet every time he used the HB. Always depress the button to save this known weakness of the Z4.

I did share this on FB but I thought I'll add here too. I had my interior retrimmed: seats, door cards and all gaiters.

Just need to do the steering wheel now :D

They look really good 👍🏻 what sort of costs are involved in something like that? I've toyed with the idea before, but never done anything about it.

Inspired by the E89 VO Pure Traction design? Or just coincidence?
