VERY VERY nearly finally bought another car

That's bad news, but it definitely sounds like walking away is the right idea!

Hope you can find a good one.

Do you have a copy of the ad? If an independent inspection shows faults not disclosed, you should get your deposit back.

It was a private sale. I paid the guy £50 as a "good will" deposit. I will ask him for it back (will be interesting to see what he says), but It's the £300 for the RAC inspection. Admittedly I am happy to lose £300 than potentially thousands on a crap car, so all good I suppose. Only thing is if I keep spending £300 to inspect too many cars, I won't be able to afford to actually buy one :)

I can't help but keep coming back to this one, even though I think it may bankrupt me and has probably got serious issues:

Doesn’t matter if private or not, if not described correctly you are entitled to your deposit back.

Did I ever mention the om sound on those? :D

Also, managed to get 26 mpg on a very light footed return from holiday yesterday …

Just been in for a BMW service, ask to see the health check sheet??

Also if it’s what you want the £300 inspection charge is worth the punt IMO

YOLO. Took me ages to work that out! :D
I don't want to live in a bedsit, alone, with a one bar electric fire, though.

You can sleep in the car with the heater on.

Apologies for the YOLO. I thought it was fairly widely used, and I was being lazy! I had a similar problem a few years ago when I saw YKYWT - which also fits here as in "you know you want to"!

But I can see your point about potential destitution, although Zedebee has a point there! Still if it looked like you were heading that way you could always sell it before you were forced into downsizing, and at least you would have had the pleasure of an M6 for a while.

After all the only regrets I have are about things I didn't do - none over things I did.

And anyway I thought one of the purposes of this forum was to encourage other members to spend their hard-earned.

Seriously though whatever you decide good luck.

FWIW A friend of mine recently had 4 RAC inspections on potential purchases and all came back with horror stories, he gave up and bought a car from a main dealers as he trusted them enough not to get an RAC check. I've never known one come back clean and it's their jobs to find faults, everytime they save you from buying a donkey they get the next £300 for next potential purchase.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying the faults are minor, I would also back out with that list. What I am saying though is that M6 will cost you another £300 for an inspection and will also have significant issues that will send you running.

My preference is a trusty mechanic who will spot the things that you miss and will provide an estimate to repair which you can use to haggle the price with a view to getting everything sorted as long as it's not too significant.

Other option is to pay main dealer premium (or a rated used car retailer) that will honour potential warranty claims.

That M6 is bloody nice though :poke:

Thanks guys, I do appreciate the feedback (my friends are all feckin hopeless with cars)! :o
Head over heart over wallet over wife over me being a tight-arse., Confusing mix TBH.
I'm a bit upset that I thought I had found a really good car, as the seller was a genuinely nice chap (and he is, just not a car freak), the service history stacked up, 2 owners blah blah...
The RAC chap was a decent bloke too. Once I got through the corporate bullsh*t, I asked him if he would buy that car. He said no. That's what did it for me.

Well that's how it tends to end up, although I can delete the wife bit!

Being realistic (just for a change) for the way you plan to use the car, if you bought a 640i how often would you wish you had bought an M6?

That is not helping Ian. :D I look at my cars more than drive them these days. It's complicated (as am I).

Sorry Andrew, I thought being vaguely sensible might be helpful!

But if you look at your cars more than you drive them then maybe the M6 wouldn't be too ruinous financially?

As always with these things... Its probably best if you go and drive the M6... And then you won't give two shits about anything else remotely sensible

How frustrating! You probably need to change the title of this topic though :poke:

RAC are always going to err on the side of caution and highlight the worst possible case scenario. Seller doesn't sound trustworthy though (particularly judging by his reaction to the report) and I'd say you've definitely done the right thing walking away.

Probably the sort of car where you need some kind of warranty, a healthy contingency fund, or plenty of luck.

The seller made a complaint to the RAC this morning. They basically told him to feck off, as he's not their customer. He started bleating on at me about how many of the issues are lies, blah blah. So I emailed him the whole report when it came through. He shut up after that. And he has returned my £50 deposit, so fair play.
Been looking at M4 coupes again today. I wonder what I will choose not to buy tomorrow?

Actually a car drove down our road today. It stopped about 50 yards away so I couldn't see the badge and I didn't recognise it. It looked like a Maserati from the back, had quad exhausts and was a really shiny red. When it came back out I saw it from a window and saw it was a KIA, but couldn't read the model. :o So I looked it up. It was a KIA Stinger! 3.3L turbo 365bhp, looks absolutely stunning.
I had never heard of them.

These are really really really great cars, packed with tech, speedy, sound half decent, sweet warranty… just the badge. If you can look past the badge (and you should) they’re dope cars, come in some nice colours to, the red is really nice and deep, orange stands out too :D

Not many Stingers were ever sold, BMW M money if I remember for a Kia - they do look good though but would have dropped money like a rock based on the badge
