It looks like you still have the bottom of the shock absorber connected that will limit how far the wishbone will drop.

Yep possibly This ... Use the jack to put force on the bolt if you struggle.

It does look like that but I resisted saying it, because the op. said in his first post that it's disconnected !

When I replaced mine I removed the spring from the lower seating first. On replacement I located it on the upper mounting point first.

For removal I found a slight amount of leverage on the lower wishbone together with grabbing the lower part of the spring and twisting it out at a point midway between the rear and outside of the car (if that makes sense) enabled easy removal.

Plus, as others have said, jack the whole of the rear of the car up, disconnect both shocks from the lower mounting point and release the handbrake.

I can't comment fully on replacement because I fitted coilovers, so it was very easy to replace the spring at its lowest setting and simply adjust it once in place.

Hope this helps.

Hi,

according to the BMW manual the drive shaft should be removed or disconnect at one end not sure, but I didn't have to on mine.

Maybe try taking the plastic insert off the car body and insert it into the top of the spring it might give you a small bit of extra clearance !

Plastic is flush and wont give any more room

Car is jacked up and on stands

I am struggle to get top or bottom into position.

Its as if the arms do not want to lower.....

I have managed to bend a steel bar as well

You must be doing something wrong mate. Shame I didn't see this earlier as i'd have come out for a ride.

Done mine last week. Shock bolt out, push down and spring should go in.

Only thing i can see on what everyone has posted is... Handbrake, think its still on, will it make a big difference?

Have you got this sorted? From that pic you have your pry bar in the wrong place I think. It loos like your tyring to jam it in past the spring.
I did mine on my own on Friday by taking the shock off at the bottom and then using a standard 40cm pry bar jammed in so it was under the wishbone just behind the hub and resting on the caliper or some part of the hub assembly. It sort of stuck up a little I think so you could sort of lean backwards with you weight and do the spring with your hand. So your prying the wishbone down not the spring itself.

It was hacked up onto 2 axle stands so they were on the rear jacking block things but tbh I only did that cos I replaced both. Just one side at a time would be fine.

I couldn't put all my weight in it as I also had to lever the spring in. It was tight. I located the top first then pried the wishbon down to get the bottom in

According to what I've read and saw on some DIY videos...... Two people are required. With wheel off and damper(shock) disconnected as you have done..... 2nd person stands on rotor hub ... His weight will force wheel assembly down and 1st person removes old and replaces with new. Took 5 minutes start to finish on the video....
