No matter how much force is applied on long bar i can not get it low enough to get the spring in :headbang:

What am i doing wrong......

Do i need both sides jacked up??

HELP

Nope no go, i have had my weight of 15.5 stone and still can not get clearance?

Cant get the broken on out of the nearside either??

Care to take any pics? I've done this myself more than once and it shouldn't be difficult, I can only thing something isn't being done quite right?

As I said, where are you? If by chance you're local I can lend a hand.

It may be that the springs that are in place are the incorrect springs and are actually longer than they should be and if that's the case then using a pair of spring compressors may be the answer.

:o :(

Maidstone Kent, i have done this before on a TT.....

Springs are M from surplex and are the same size as the one i yanked out....

Txt on o785276549 7 if any one can assist!

The broken one will not come out either!

If you have a normal jack you can use it to expand the gap by placing it on the arm etc. mine came out very easily just by pressing down on the disc with my foot.

Thanks for all you help, i have had my weight on a bar, big gap, just not big enough......

I have put the springs together and they are the same size as the new ones??

I bought a scissor jack from a 3 series off ebay for £20. I used that to jack up rear a bit then got a trolley jack in to get it up nice and high. I then used the scissor jack to open up the gap for spring replacement. It wedged nicely on the wheel axle and near the top of the spring as far as I remember. You just use the jack to open the gap.
I saw this tip on youtube makes the rear spring job so easy. Hunt far a scissor type jack in someone elses car.

Full weight of me, pushing down from the garage beam above, wife trying to push it in..... No go!

I would say i still need one or two inches more

If i didn't have an intact spring i would say they where to big.

Its as if the anti roll bar is holding it up, but i have tried with that off?

At a complete loss, i have changed front and rear suspension before and never had this problem

4 pack of beer to the first person that solves this mystery!! Or a bottle of wine if thats more your fancy......

Spring not going in, full push on bar

Size of spring against the old one, it looks a fraction bigger, but it not, think its the angle of the camera, but its more than a fraction out!

Am watching this with interest as I plan to do the same job at the weekend. Have you released the parking brake? The tensioned cable may restrict the downward movement of the control arm.

Hi,

according to the BMW manual the drive shaft should be removed or disconnect at one end not sure, but I didn't have to on mine.

Maybe try taking the plastic insert off the car body and insert it into the top of the spring it might give you a small bit of extra clearance !
