How high have you got it jacked up? Is it on a trolley jack on the jack point?

according to the BMW manual the drive shaft should be removed or disconnect at one end not sure, but I didn't have to on mine.
Maybe try taking the plastic insert off the car body and insert it into the top of the spring it might give you a small bit of extra clearance !

It does look like that but I resisted saying it, because the op. said in his first post that it's disconnected !
Angus McCoatup said:When I replaced mine I removed the spring from the lower seating first. On replacement I located it on the upper mounting point first.
For removal I found a slight amount of leverage on the lower wishbone together with grabbing the lower part of the spring and twisting it out at a point midway between the rear and outside of the car (if that makes sense) enabled easy removal.
Plus, as others have said, jack the whole of the rear of the car up, disconnect both shocks from the lower mounting point and take the handbrake off.
I can't comment fully on replacement because I fitted coilovers, so it was very easy to replace the spring at its lowest setting and simply adjust it once in place.
Hope this helps.

Done mine last week. Shock bolt out, push down and spring should go in.
