Trapped Water

Just posted this on someone elses thread in the problems forum but haven't had a reply so thought I'd post a new thread here to seek help.

Hi Folks,

After the rain of the last few days, I now also have a "Sloshing" sound which appears to be running around the O/S however it sounds like its flowing around the car. So accelerating, its rear, braking its front. Can't hear anything N/S.

So far I have cleared the hood drains (they weren't bad to be honest, used the well tested method of rod and hoover & then tested and flowing fine), I've removed the wiper facia and all dry in there, Cleared the two bulk head drains as described above (one as badly blocked but the other clear, some water flowed out). Lone behold the water is still trapped somewhere. :headbang:

At this point very things still working. The cabin and boot is completely dry.

Any idea's???

Thanks

Thanks Etedlm, I've check them by giving them a shake when static and nothing. Check the drain holes in the doors and all clear. :headbang:

Was it the O/S bulkhead drain that was blocked? I fear it may have overflowed into the structural tubes running under the doors. I sure hope I'm wrong! Not even sure this is possible, but the water is somewhere.

Not sure how to confirm or remediate this. I suppose jack the car to create a low point and drill a small hole. Could be plugged with a sheet metal screw and sealant. Or welded if you're concerned about holes in structures.

Hi folks,

Firstly thanks for all the idea's above and the good news is I found it! It looks like BCW was right!

I gave up looking and my usual indy couldn't get me in until next week. So I found these guys http://www.carcare-sheffield.co.uk/ Who kindly said pop down and we'll take a look.

Now I'm always sceptical with new garages claiming to be specialists however I have to say within a few minutes I new these guys know what there talking about and if they make a decent job of this I will be going back.

They put the car aon the ramps, pulled a clip out from underneath he O/S skirt and out the water gushed! (probably a good 2-3 litres if not more!) So I suspect BCW was right as it was the O/S bulkhead drain that was blocked!

I'm booked back in for Monday so they can try and find the leak point but t looks like no damage was done and they've left 2 clips out in the mean time to stop anymore build up. :driving:

I'll let you all know the outcome so that if you get a similar sound you know what to go check. Thanks again.

It's rather disconcerting that water can find it's way into a main structural member like that, but after the roof drain fiasco, we shouldn't be surprised. Good to know at least that it's easy to drain out.

Hey "Seal3.0", I know this post goes back a few months but I think I may have the same problem and I was just wondering if you could tell us where the clip is located that the guys took out for you:

"pulled a clip out from underneath he O/S skirt ..."

Thanks!

I had this same problem a couple of years ago. I fixed it by taking a cable tie and poking it through the very narrow gap at the back of where the rear jacking block is fixed to the sill. I poked it horizontally from the centre of the car towards the outside, at the base of the jacking block. Rodded it back and forward a few times to increase the flow and about 4 pints of water came out (clear, not rusty, thankfully). It has not happened again.

You don't need a ramp or jack to do this, you just need to lie down next to the car.

It was quite funny at the time, when I braked hard it sounded like some one swishing the water backwards and forwards in a plastic bath...

Hmm. I wonder if the "clip" the OP was referring to was the jacking block?

Thanks edderby, I'll take a look at that. What I did was pull the jacking block to the outside (had to hold it there) and the water came running out. Did this both at the back and did the same with the jacking block at the front of the car and more water came running out. All of this on the driver's side, no water trapped on passenger side when I tried the same thing with the jacking blocks on that side of the car.

So I guess the question now is what is the root cause of this problem, is it:

- Water getting in somewhere it shouldn't, some sort of leak
or (given what solved your problem)
-some sort of drainage blocked causing the water to back up

I will try and find this "gap" and see if I can unblock, thanks for the advice!

It's not much of a gap Marco, just about 2mm high and 15mm wide from memory. I'm sure it's not intended to be a drain, so the real drain (wherever that is?) is probably still blocked - but this fix has worked on my car since I did it.

Same as you, I only had the flooded sill on the driver's side.

Thanks mate I will give it a go as soon as I find a dry piece of ground to lie on! :)

Guess what? Spotted this thread yesterday and got a slosh slosh today :o

Wiggled the drivers side jacking point and loads... and loads..... and Loads of [clear] water flooded out. n/s seems ok, but will drive tomorrow and check no more sloshing noises.

Now just need to clear the drain ...... wherever that is! :?

p.s. why do I need a jacking point? I've got run-flats, so no jack included

:worthless:

Would love to see a pic of where Im supposed to probe for water ...
Some of us older folk are not so horizontally mobile as many are apparently here..
Just sayin

The suspect drains are for the windscreen cowl, where the wiper mechanism is. There''s two, main one's low on the left side (RHD) and somewhat obvious. The other is hidden, high and somewhat in the centre. For effective cleaning you probably need to remove the cowl cover. While it's off lubricate the wiper joints, and if you don't mind mechanical fiddling, clean the contact plate in the wiper motor.

You may not need a jacking point, but your mechanic does to access the underside. :P

Find the square[ish] jacking plate and give it wiggle/lift ... out comes the water

p.s. I'm 62 and I managed.
