If you dont use it your basically paying for someone else to enjoy it when you sell.... My opinion anyway

This is very true. Although define "use it". I use my Z whenever I can/ want to.

I decided to get it as a weekend toy. My commute is along A-roads, which whilst it sounds nice I spend 80%+ of the time stuck behind lorries/ tractors/ numpties driving at 40mph, I have driven the ///M to work a few times, but it has always been a frustrating drive as I am merely getting from A to B and not enjoying it. (the mere fact of not commuting in my car means I remove 9000m per annum).

This means I drive my car to enjoy it and when I do drive I have nothing but a smile on my face. I get just as much fun out of my ///M driving 4k per year in it, always having fun as I would driving 13k per year in it (getting nothing out of the commute).

In my opinion, I'm not "paying for someone else to enjoy it", but "maximising enjoyment and minimising depreciation".

Everyone's entitled to an opinion.
Mine's a fair weather, high days and holidays car. I trundle up and down the motorway to work in all weathers in my fuel efficient 2.0 tdi passat. I park it in pub car parks and tesco with no worries at all. The kids can spill their drinks or vomit on the seats and I'm not too bothered.
If I want to go out for a "spirited" drive or go for a weekend in the lakes or a blast round the peaks I take the Z. It could well be a future classic and may even start to appreciate in value aided by its low mileage. And it's a keeper.
I'm certainly not paying for someone else to enjoy it though.
If your circumstances dictate you have to use yours as a daily driver then that's up to you, it's not something I'd normally feel the need to comment on.

This is true, and well articulated. It mirrors my situation almost exactly. My commute is either a 150 mile round trip on a motorway or 15-20 miles to a train station usually. Always in heavy traffic, always monotonous. The last type of drive I'd want to do in the M really.

+1 I have a C4 diesel on 101k miles for the work commute and going shopping in etc. The M is saved for nicer journeys, good weather and other things. It's intended as a very long term purchase so I am not protecting it's mileage on purpose or just to sell on to someone else at a higher price. There will be a Euro trip next year and other things planned. You will need to pry the keys from my cold dead hands.

As above, I have a diesel Astra for piling the miles onto.

By contrast, in 2008 I purchased a 2006 Mini Cooper S (I was 21), it was the first 'performance oriented' car I was able to own. At the time I was doing a lot of business miles. I put roughly 43,000 miles on it before selling it 18 month later (due to a new position). I loved that car and hated having to sell it.

Did I get more enjoyment out of driving ~2400 miles per month in the mini, than I do driving ~400 miles per month in the Z.........no....and mainly as the miles in the Z are all fun. 95%+ of the miles in the mini were motorway trawling or monotonous commuting.
