Strange clicking noise

Well I'm usually on the case and can spot these things miles off, but I have an odd noise that's bugging me.

Best way to describe it is a noise similar to when as kids we'd stick a twig in the spokes of our bikes and it made the high speed clicking noise as you rode (Well I did) It's faint, but annoying and noticable with windows open or roof down.

It's related to speed not engine revs and frequency is way above 1 rev per wheel, but has to be a wheel or axle issue.

Initial though is a wheel bearing or perhaps brake pads on the grooved discs. appeared 1,000 miles ago and hasn't changed or got worse since (I was kind of hoping it would to aid finding)

Any thoughts, or anyone had this before?

I had a similar sound a while back on my Coupe. It was like the spokey-dokey's that came in Frosties when I was younger!

Anyway, back on topic after 500 miles or so it just disappeared and never returned...

Probably embarass myself here, but could it be a stone stuck in the groove of the tyre?

OK, I'll get my coat.............

pvr - nope - this is a new one. Did you tamper wiht my car while I was not looking??

flimper - OK get your coat. This happens way more often that once per wheel revolotion

hunter - cats make more of a thud, thud, noise

2 Zero - thank heavens I'm not alone here.......

to me it sounds like thin metal, like the shield behind the rotor or.......

Well I'm looking for sugestions so that's one I'll look at but would expect such things to be more of a scrape or squeek. I'm tending towards a roller in the wheel bearing or a pad l=clicking on a groove in the disc but experience tell me it'll be a b*tch to find.

See if there are any more ideas

I just had a similar experience. One metallic click per wheel rotation. It was very noticeable as a tic-tic-tic reflected from roadside walls when driving along with the hood down.

Taking advantage of an automatic convertable: I walked alongside while my partner drove the car at walking pace. (Being able to do this is also an advantage of living in a rural area!) I could clearly hear a metallic crunch, once per revolution of the left rear wheel.

Despite having decided which corner was the culprit, I could not identify the cause, so I removed the wheel, and found a shard of flint embedded in the central projecting part of the tread (i.e., not within a groove) of my almost brand new tyre! I removed the shard (2x1x0,3mm), and spat on the hole it left (not out of anger, but to detect any leak). There was none, I'm glad to say.

It was like a miniature version of a prehistoric axehead that the archaeologists dig up, so I am glad it did not stay there or I might well have had to test the efficacy of my mobility kit (see threads passim).

maybe you have two stones stuck in your treads?! or in more than one wheel?

honestly thats all I can think of :?

Def not the 'stone' idea, although I've had this and the little critters make a huge noise. This has to be closer to 10 or 20 clicks per revolution.

Propshaft?

Good thinking, but not what I'm hoping for. It's a distinctive possibility if one of the needle rollers in a UJ is dry, or starting to fall to bits

Its dodgy but if you could jack it up securely with the rear wheels off the ground and let it idle in gear you might be able to pinpoint the noise under the car a bit easier.

My car had the clicking noise for about 10 minutes last week. The noise disappeared when I turned the steering wheel. It was about 1-2 clicks per rotation. But it was quite loud. I stopped and checked all wheels, and couldn't see any problem.

I've done variations of that so will probably do something along those lines

I've had the same noise. It's gone away once but is back now and of course it's finally top down weather so it can be clearly heard. I've wondered if it might have to do with the fan.
