So who has been driving in the snow ?????

Being honest and frank, the zed in the snow is as much use as a chocolate teapot .

Beg to differ. Have spent the last 5 days taking mine everywhere, and I mean everywhere. Have had no bother and have tackled snow and ice laden hills that many other cars couldn't handle. Thoroughly enjoyed the looks on people's faces when I overtook them as they spun their wheels half way up the slopes.

The closest I have came to problems is when my street thawed enough for the tyre paths to melt, this left a big hump of snow up the middle that the car keeps grounding on, but it still doesn't stop her, she just makes some odd noises lol

Yep me too, the Z has been alot better than most of the other BMs i have owned.

People look at me like am mad when i drive past, makes me laugh alot esp when half of them haven't got a clue how to drive on snow.

I was driving last week in slush first then about 1/2 inch of snow it was a disaster..sliding all over the place !
ABS was kicking in all the time...gotta change my tyres

There were Nissan Micra's overtaking me, all I could do in some places was 30 Kph or If it was a straight road 50KPH.
I also had trouble getting up any slight incline. :headbang:

Thought I'd add my two penneths. This is the car now having been totally cleared of a similar level of snow yesterday when I attempted to get it off the drive. With hind site I am glad I didnt get it away because if I'd got to work it wouldnt have had the clearance to get it parked! I've removed snow from the edge of the door about two hours ago but the stuff on the roof laid in about 36 hours. I would love to take it out to the car park about a mile away but I dont think it is going anywhere for the time being!

Chocolate tea pot ?

Time has come to defo consider winter tyres and 16" rims ..........
It's great sliding around in the Zed, but it's going to end in tears .........
Been checking out various makes - was difficult making the final choice ............ and none of them are cheap .... !!!!

Anyway, after much mucking about, I settled on these / this :D

(well come on hahahahaha you can get 'em for peanuts ...... )

I got a leaflet through the post today from my dealer. The are advertising winter wheels plus tyres for a starting price of £600.

Nice Rangey teamemmenracing

LOL

I took a quick trip to Tesco earlier this evening - sheet black ice is the flavour around here at the moment. There was some snow/sleet overnight last night plus a heavy-but-short snow/sleet/hail shower on my commute this morning, and because it's been cold all day it's just frozen solid on the ground including some main roads. Scary stuff.

Brilliant tent teamemmenracing, hope it has the strenght to put up with a big snow fall, hearing on the news Aberdeen is a no go zone at the moment.

:?

Mind you have you seen this

The Z behaves very well at winter, given you have good winter tyres with practical dimensions for driving in snow .. (narrow tires)

In my M roadster I crossed the high mountains in Norway (1200 metres) at late winter, with snowy and icy roads.
(Usually the car spent the winter hibernating but this was a special occasion)

The route turned out to be more than I bargained for, with slow progress and night approaching.
But I was very positively surprised by the performance.
I contribute a big part of that to the winter tyres which were top of class.
And then on our way down there was the 40 or so people stuck in the uphill climb trying to get up the mountain, but unable to do so bc of the icy roads.
Their surprise seeing a high performance sports car coming down from the mountain they were not able to climb. LOL
I enjoyed seeing their faces, some of them with a puzzled WTF expression. :D

If you have DSC on, and take it easy you will do fine. Excellent tyres and intelligent driving seems to be a big part of the equation.

Even got some photos from that day, taken before we arrived at the worst part where conditions went from fair to terrifying. You can get a taste of what most of the rest of the road looked like in the sideways picture, except there were much more polished ice.
Safe and sound across I needed a 5 minute break to calm the nerves before continuing. LOL

Poor effort - your roof's up :poke:

Seriously though, completely agree with you that the tyres make a huge difference. I've not driven my Z4 very far on it's winter tyres and haven't deliberately put myself in a situation where they'd be of serious benefit, but I'm glad to have them should I be somewhere other than home and get hit by a snowstorm etc.

Just fitted winter tyres (have posted about this) so I'll see what happens when the snow arrives again. It's the only car I have might have to get the Honda CBF1000 out the garage if the Zed doesn't move again!

ok ok ok , i admit it , ill come clean

its snowing really heavily here at the moment, with a nice 3 inch covering, and i admit to putting the back end out on every corner on the lanes, because it give a massive smile on my face :)

i admit i might even have gone to the garden center carpark to see it was open, and then had to do a few donuts because i couldnt find the way out

love the z4 in the snow!!

Its good practice to look all around you before moving off, and a few donuts are obviously the best way to do this. :D :P

I was doing donuts in Morrisons carpark on Neilston Rd in Paisley at 8.30am on Christmas Day last year - had dropped the wife at work, was on my way to my folks for the day, stopped in at Morrisons for some "shopping" but wouldn't you believe it, they were closed

So I had to find my way out of the car park but ended up going round in circles...

In all seriousness, it was the perfect place (without access to an airfield) to investigate the limits of the Z4 in the ice/snow and how the car behaves - car park was empty, no pedestrians, etc. Nobody else was daft enough to be out at that time in the morning..

I only picked my car up 3 weeks ago so I've not realy had any option but to drive in the snow hence my avatar is a snow covered car!!

It's most definately not the best car I've had in the snow but equally I've had worse. I am however gald that it's not my first RWD car as it would have been a very steep learning curve!!

I am most definately bored of snow now and couldn't believe it when my car was covered in snow again!

Well i picked up my Z and took it down to London for the whole Christmas period now... thinking there would never be enough snow here to stop me driving it..... how wrong...

Last week 3+ inch of snow in Derby and i had my company car (focus estate) in london which had a dusting... and now no snow in Derby and a good few cm here in London :x

Turn the DSC on... its a bit of a wildcat in the snow but atleast it moves forward! Soft compound summer tyres really dont cut it!

Also with the snow frozen over the back of my roof i find my roof being very noisey agaisnt the roll bars... almost as if the snow has pulled it down slightly so it now rubs against them :(
