It's a question I've asked my self a few times. One is a object of desire the other a physical & mental pleasure. Both are separate hobbies, they just go together rather well.
Me I like my cars, but I love driving more and I don't need a special car to enjoy a special drive. The car is just the dressing that adds to the event.
Other people I know get more enjoyment from owning and pampering their physical car / cars.
I get satisfaction from seeing my car looking good and showing it off, but I'd always rather be driving it sideways out of dusty T junction, on a deserted country road.
Both is not an option.
