I'm really sorry it's taken this long to reply. Iv'e been no stop. I got the heaters from screwfix last year @ £20 each, but unfortunately they have been discontinued. I'm still in the process of getting my workshop finished as you can see by the photo.
Over the Christmas period I have been trying to master Fusion 360, because I was lucky enough to get my 3D printer early off my wife, cos i'm 60 this month

When I stripped my car down i mentioned about doing copies of the soft top side cover & this got loads of interest. So after doing all the research the only alliterative I had was to 3D print the locking mechanism. You will see by all these photos it's been a long slug to get all the dimensions correct.
The test parts are made with the PLA filament that came with the printer. I have some samples of filament I need to try out. I have just ordered a spool of ASA X because I've found out its more stable than ABS. The cover will be still vacuum formed in ABS.
As soon as I get my workshop done I will copy some dash trim in Carbon Fibre & 3D print things like clips & fasteners out a Carbon Fibre/Nylon filament. Carbon Fibre/Nylon filament is as strong as an alloy!
To 3D print any material with CF in it you need to a printer that will heat the hot end up to 300c & the build plate up to 120c. That type of filament is very abrasive so you need hardened nozzle & extruder.
I am plan to make engine bay components such as air intakes. I have a GruppeM intake so I could make my own version. I will use ASA X for the MAF housing. To quote the manufactures. "ASAX is UV and weather resistant and has high colour stability. Combined with high strength and heat resistance, the material is perfect for outdoor and AUTOMOTIVE APPLICATIONS".

It's taken many pain staking hours to get some where close to the original parts. the area that's been the worsted is the small retaining lugs that sit inside each part. They are designed to allow the two parts too separate if the roof is razed by mistake.
As I've already mentioned the test parts have been made out of PLA. I have a couple of minor adjustments to make then I'll start printing in other materials so I can decide which is the best to use. The BMW plastic is PA6/30%GK. To days filament is much more advanced. I will do lots of stress test to make sure I'm using the correct filament.

I particularly like the attention to detail and replication of original items exactly (so they don't break as you say). Well worth the extra effort.
Already looked at that. Either I buy a set next time some come up for sale & take molds off them. Or the other alternative is to model out of clay. Iv'e watched a few videos, but thats a skill set on it's own.JamieZ4C said:

Pleased you like my little setup. I built the Liquid cooled PC, it's bit over the top, but as you can already see I like a challenge ha.

I often wondered if they could be 3d scanned and a mold printed from that, even if it was in parts? (bear in mind my knowledge in these matters is beginner at best!)
