Poor thing didn't make it through the night :-(

not good news this, kept up with your thread across the weekend, but havent posted until now. Absolutely gutted for you.

Some people dont understand grieving for animals when its their time, but they become as much part of the family as humans, in many ways more so as they dont judge you or have an opinion, just unconditional companionship. Anyway, i dont think this is helping, so i'll end here, but I was very sad to read this thread, both lovely looking dogs.

Thank you for your messages. It does help to see we are not the only ones...
We decided that after the holidays we will look for a worthy successor to take over his role and to be loved. Raiko was very popular with all our friends, and was really loved by a lot of people. So his successor will have his work cut out :)

Ours is Bob too! (But a girl). We'd be the same. She came to the house as a pup for my 40th.
 
Ours died when he was only 10 a year and a half ago (my avatar). Not in a position yet to replace him as the thought of having to go through that again is not good.

I understand how you feel. But for us, the love we got from him was worth so much more than our grief when he left us.
And seeing Bengo all alone in the garden now, without his loyal compagnon... It's just not fair to Bengo either. He deserves another good friend.
 
Yes, it is probably the best approach in a way. Definitely get insurance though I would suggest.
 
Really sad to hear of your loss, must be heartbreaking. I remember our family dog having to be put down very clearly, it was on my 21st birthday and it was fair to say I wasn't in the mood for partying into adulthood.

My wife and I have recently got married and both really want to get a dog now (a black lab) and hearing your story reminds me of how serious a commitment it is but also how much love and company a pooch can provide.
 
In the meantime we have been able to accept Raiko's passing. But now Bengo's behaviour is changing: he's more affecionate and cries when he is alone. So we decided to adopt another dog to give Bengo a new compagnon. We contacted an animal shelter that saves dogs in Spain: http://ace-charity.org

And we have just signed a contract to adopt "Balto", a small mixed breed. He will arrive by plane in Brussels, coming from Malaga on 19 december!

We've chosen a dog from this particular shelter because lots of dogs and cats are being dumped in so-called "death stations", especially due to the recession. Furthermore, dogs are really ill-treaten in Spain in general. ACE is one of those shelters that rescues dogs from these death stations. Balto was left behind on the shelters doorstep. When the shelter examined him, they noted he was chipped, so they contacted the owners. The owner admitted leaving the dog behind and even explained that his children were so sad they had to see a psychiatrist because of it. Still the owner did not want to take the dog back. So when the shelter asked for the reason of leaving him behind, he said "because"... Apparantly that's the way dogs are treated in Spain. :x

In the shelter Balto is very unhappy, he is afraid of all the barking dogs and crawls in every possible corner, this for the last 10 months already. Last week he got into the laundry basket just to have some peace and quiet... So we hope we can give him some peace and quiet, a loving home and a great compagnon to play with :)

He probably will be in shock, taken from a nice sunny climate to a freezing Belgium :D

lol, we actually asked about that. But apparantly it won't be a problem. With short haired or more fragile dogs they do advise a wintercoat :-)

I'd hate to think what I'd be like if we lost one of our cats suddenly like that.

It's true, only people with pets really understand the heart-ache... people not having pets simply go: "that's life" or "oh well" or "just get another one"
