I wouldn,t want it back after that & Take the ££ if it,s offered

Very true, if you can get your money back then I'd take it on the chin and look for another one when you have your money back.

I've just bought a crashed z4m in a very similar state. Cat d. They will probably write it off and it will become someones pride and joy who can't afford the premium price tag! I just hope they give you what you paid.

Not sure exactly what formula they use but it's something like if the repair costs are predicted to exceed half the market value then it will be deemed beyond economical repair.

There is easily a few grand in the repair and more at BMW approved prices. Could be a close call.

Good luck. You could take a settlement buy back the car then repair it and pocket a grand.

^^ I agree. Theres always a profit to be made by buying the car back at around 20% even if you don't have the knowledge/connections to get it fixed. You should be able to sell it as it is for a lot more than what they charge to buy it back.

The damage on yours looks a lot lighter as well.

On the body yes. But mine had suspension damage too. Aswell as a broken brake disc!

If you don't mind answering, how much did you buy it for and how much to fix? I often think about doing that with a CatD car and keeping as a second car, maybe now's my chance with mine. Suppose the problem is it's hard to sell on but if I'm keeping it, maybe it doesn't matter. It's the economics that's hard to place.

Dave

Got the car for 6k and the discs are 117 each trade and the wishbones are about 60. I got lucky and got a pair of complete doors with mirrors for 50!! So theres a lot of profit to be made there. Not only that but the seller also gave me a complete boot lid with clear third brake light and wind deflector clipped in for free! The headlight in the pic cost 100 although I just won a doner hid headlight for a tenner which I will use to make a complete bixenon with the undamaged parts from the original. The wing was 120 brand new trade. The front bumper will easily repair and so will the rear quarter.

As reguards to selling. Obviously its going to be worth less so as long as you price it accordingly then it shouldn't be too much of a problem. Especially if like me you have pics of the whole process to show that everything has been done right then that will also help the sale. As long as you get it back on the road for no more than it would sell for then you're ok. I bought this car to keep so am not too fussed. Although I'm quite sure I'd make a profit with mine as I can paint all the panels myself.

Thanks everyone. Nice to have so much empathy.

Stressing myself out on a Saturday night of all nights though. Reading up about insurers paying out bottom book for write-off cars.

The fact is I bought the car as Approved Used from a main BMW dealer with full BMW service history, 12months warranty with low mileage and A1 condition (£10,486). I'm concerned they'll offer me £9k-ish and not take into account the fact it came from BMW and therefore should command a better residual.

Looking on Autotrader, I can only find independents selling similar spec, age, condition for £10,500 upwards. BUT, I don't want to replace it with anything other than an Approved Used BMW from BMW.

What does everybody think? How can I prepare myself fro a battle?

Presumably the other party's insurer will be paying.

For a write off, I would expect an amount which would enable me to buy a BMW AUC with full BMW service history, 12 months BMW warranty, low mileage and A1 condition (i.e. the same as the written off car), nothing less. I wouldn't expect the 10.5k that you paid, but an amount that could purchase a BMW AUC currently for sale - the cheapest currently for sale is 12k.

Thanks. That's certainly how I feel about it but don't know how insistent I can be. If they eventually offer £10,486, would I be able to turn it down on the basis that I would need more to get a similar car again?

Yes... Well I did! They claimed their best offer was my invoice price - I fought hard but got more. Drop me a PM if you get to that stage, I've still got emails I sent etc to give you a guide and to help you. Bare in mind my claim was in summer when prices were a bit stronger though.
