New Tyres Fitted-Slightly Confused

After taking my zed into a local ATS garage they raised it in the air to discover my two rear tyres were on the legal limit. :headbang: My car had been driving pretty bad for a while now but I thought this was a mixture of the car being the way it was built i.e the z4 is known for tramlining alot and a puncture a had seemed to have picked up!!

The chap said my tyres were bold so I had 4 new Michelin Pilot Sport PS2's priced up and they came in at £860.00

He said to me I have to have runflats again as the car as sensors in the wheel to indicate the driver of any punctures. Is this true I thought everyone on the forum were recommending to ditching them how can this be if you cant fit normal tyres on?

I went for the Michelin PS2's as i had read on here that they were good tyres for the zed. He told me the Ps2's are called Ps2 ZP's (ZP indicating they are runflats) and that these are the ones I need. Is this all correct and does anyone else have these tyres?

My car seems to be driving much better i.e not trammling as bad, alot smoother, less road noise, but the steering slightly heavier is this normal with these tyres? Rear tyres are 255/35wr18 and fronts 225/40wr18

Thanks for your help.

Ouch, those Michelin are expensive but that seems like the going rate.

The wheels don't have sensors in them, the abs system is used to detect changes in the diameter of the tyre. (although in the US this was changed to sensors in the valves at the facelift stage IRC)

Not sure about the heavier steering, maybe just the difference in grip :?

id imagine after a couple of hundred miles the tyres will feel a bit better. i read on this people dump the run flats, i dont think i would, mainly as you have no spare!

Normal tyres/tires can be fitted, seems to be a common misconception amongst the fitters (which seems to way heavily in their favor for making a tidy profit :sly2: ). ZP at the end does indicate run-flat (ZP= Zero Pressure), but the standard PS2's are highly regarded in this community, although they do not come cheap.

Well it's a bit late really as you've gone with them and they're a good tyre. You could have fitted Falkens at about £400 the lot inc. fitting. No spare is the downside unless you carry a spacesaver, else a motability kit or tyre gubge and compressor.

Tyre pressure sensors is garbage. As Herminator says they work out a tyre has lower pressure as it's rolling radius decreases if it looses presure. Teh ABS sensors can calculate this over a period of about 20 minutes. It works with any tyre of tyre.

Steering shoudl feel lighter if you have fitted new tyres with more tread. Perhaps the pressure has been set lower so check them yourself with a good gauge.

The US version has the sensors in the wheels on the post-facelift ones.

I agree on checking the pressure-the OEMs are actually a bit higher than for non-runflats.

The Michelins are not cheap, but neither are the OEM Bridgestones and the Michelins have a longer treadlife.

In the US they switched to sensors in 2007. Facelifted '06's use the ABS system.

So are you happy with the tires? I've been thinking about picking up some PS2's and wonder what the real world difference is between the two versions.

out of interest i assume using the cans of foam you can get is not advisable? i have a tin of auto inflate/seal foam stuff from my old car, would it be worth keeping if i changed to non rft?

in fact scrub that - just searched the forum, ill keep it just in case!

//M's come with no spare and non-runflats as standard.. and we get a can of gunk and a pump too, so i'd keep it

If it's enough volume for our big tires, I would. You don't have a sensor in the wheel to gunk up.

I also have the PS2 ZP's and find them great

not noticed any heavier steering though :? sure your pressures are up as they should be?

I noticed heavier steering when I changed to non rfts. More positive though.

Sure yours are W rated? http://www.blackcircles.com/information?modelid=8651122&cid=912&productid=11298718

A set of four PS2 ZP's were £680 from Costco until this weekend just gone, mainly because it was 20% off with a set of tyres...

They are meant to be very good though.

I've just bought FK452's, will be fitting at the weekend, and sourcing a few foams and 12v compressor pump.

i think as overkill said they must have told me this to get some more money out of me. As a whole im very pleased with the tyres they seems so much more chunkier than the bridgestones i had previous.
Gannet, i noticed this morning there is a slight gap between the inside of the alloy and the rotors, it wasn't there before i changed to ps2's is this anything to worry about?

i will check the pressures what should they be back and front with these tyres?

I just run the stock pressures recommended on the door panel...

Forgot to mention last night that I too no longer have any tramlining :D

I never have been able to work out the pressures on the doors. What do you put in psi terms front and back?

Basically where before the wheel fitted flush with the car there is now a gap like its been spaced or something?

Have you got close up pics of yours by any chance?

I'll have to check the sticker tonight

dont recall any gaps - you mean on the hub between the wheel and car? I'd have to check, but no dont have close up photos - Ill take a look tonight

You're finding some very unusual things since just swapping tyres. Is this because it's the first time you've taken a close look and are seeing things that you did not notice before?

Perhaps post up the exact tyre sizes they fitted and what rims you're running. Photos are great too

Jeeper, no defo not im so fussy about my car and know what everything looks like so it stuck out to me badly. I think your right i need to take pics and get more info. thanks for your help i love this forum.
