Nest v Hive v Tado

Best part so far is that noone knows how to override it yet

Believe me the various other domestic users figure it out. They prod and poke at various buttons and turn dials, using the same logic that if you sit enough monkeys in front of pianos, one will eventually tap out a symphony.

Mine have now downloaded the App to control the generic house temp and found the manual override on the valves.

On my system, I can switch off the override on the actual valves :)

But I am sure that it won't take long until it has been figured out, with or without threat to life

Can you stop the stats from wirring away in the middle of the night? As the temp is set to low, why do they turn ....

It's a problem on my system. My solution is a workaround.
The valve programme moves to 25c at 11pm and remains there until 7am. The heating is off at 11 and on at 6.30 so it never reaches anything like 25c so the valve sits idle at wide open all night and doesn't whir trying to seek a temperature.

Not sure I have an off position though ...

MMM - not sure about no off position. Sure my family would run heating 24/7 but Hive certainly lets you shut it down whenever you want in any timed period or at least in our case down to frost protection.

I have tried to set the timed period after 2230 to 10 degrees, I would have thought that if it stays above there that it "should" not move.

As I am not home, I can't ask the others if that helped or not.

Oh you'll be popular if it didn't work as in a silent bedroom they are very noisy if they keep making micro adjustments. I opted to put the rad heat way above desired temp so it would then allow water to circulate when the boiler came on early AM but the family were up and about before the temp rose too much. At that time the boiler shuts down.

Just play and se what works best.

I've installed a Tado as it was on sale via PC World at £149 (eventually purchased via Maplin on a price match with PCW though as they (a) had it on the shelf & (b) I had a till spit for a £10 off future purchase for something else I am intending to buy anyway).

1st impressions, I like the way I can control & vary the heat throughout the day gradually cooling off towards bedtime, also loving the way that my heating shuts off as the last person leaves the geofence around my house, Tado is supposed to recognise that a device is heading homewards & start heating up in increments depending on the location(s) of the smart devices so in theory the nearer we get to home then it should gradually warm up until we arrive & the house should be at our desired temperature - in practise though it seems to switch on as we arrive home, I'm going to make a support call to Tado as I'm sure this is something that can be resolved.

Another plus for Tado, Nest & Honeywell Evohome (but not Hive) is that that they are IFTTT compatible, this means that I can set rules for other IFTTT compatible devices, I can now set a rule that when Tado goes to 'away' mode (last person has left the geofence) then switch off my WeMo devices, I'm thinking about my earlier example of my sons gadgets drawing >300w which could be switched off automatically.

The app will let you choose if a device is to be included/excluded from the geofencing, I have a tablet with the app installed but this very rarely leaves the house so naturally this device is excluded from geofencing.

I think Tado are somewhat ahead of Hive although Hive does the Geo Location. I'm still awaiting them to get their finger out and release their Smart Plugs/lighbulbs and motion sensors which can be controlled via the App. Registered my interest ages ago but they seem to have gone quiet. The Smartplugs interest me especially for controlling lighting and appliances etc.

Geo location isn't as good on the hive though as it only gives notifications. Tado switches the heating on or off.

But at £119 the hive was hard to beat, Tado is a lot more with the water add on.

Thanks hutch, yes you're correct it only notifies you but as you say price was the temptation for me especially being with British Gas which reduced the cost and included the fitting. In my case just as well it did as the 90 minute fitting time took the poor guy fitting it nearly 4 hours.

I've heard lots of problems with Tado (on a jag forum) doesn't switch on and off at all well.
I think it also depends on lifestyle. Either myself, wife or daughter between us are often home based.

Hive is getting better but still a simple system, however backed by BG they sort any issue really quick

The evohome seems to do what I want once sorted out properly, but expensive for £900 including the 11 radiator valves.

If you look at alot of the Hive customer feedback its great when it works but obviously not when it doesn't for which British Gas then get really knocked by the customer which is understandable. I think sometimes what users don't understand is the likes of Hive is only as good as the Internet connection so if you live in a rural area with a poor connection then it has an impact. The only thing that annoys me with the Hive is they appear to use the customer as beta testers for any app changes and they don't seem to test any new app releases thoroughly enough which can be buggy until sorted. Also when there are problems with the App or Hive itself they don't update their online Hive Status page at the time of the problem which I've moaned to them about. When there are any problems I've have to visit their Twitter or Facebook Pages for any info.

Just as an update, I am liking the system. The radiator at the far end of the house that never worked (daughter's bedroom), now fully works and as she is the first one to get up in the morning, it works fine just heating the bathrooms and her room only at 5, the rest kicks in at 7. No more overheated lounge during the day, nor the dining room or any other room not used downstairs.

The setting overnight at 8c solved the night time noises - the open window must have caused a draft just on the sensor so that is now no longer kicking in.

Remote access to the system has been great as well, as when I was away, I could change the room temperature remotely.

No idea about savings - if any, but from a comfort point it works out so far just fine.

I'm glad you like it. :-)

Ok, so you spent £900 and claimed back the Vat etc, etc, but you now have a heating system that does what YOU want.

Set the optimise morning and evening and you'll be well happy!
