Nest v Hive v Tado

I've heard lots of problems with Tado (on a jag forum) doesn't switch on and off at all well.
I think it also depends on lifestyle. Either myself, wife or daughter between us are often home based.

Hive is getting better but still a simple system, however backed by BG they sort any issue really quick

On my Tado v2, manual override in the app is not instant and can take a minute to kick in, it also seems to heat up in stages to avoid overshooting - pretty much fit and forget once you tell it your wake up and bed time schedule. Geolocation works brilliant though, you can set tune the comfort factor which adjusts how aggressively it warms the home by ramping up the target temp as you get closer.

In four months I've had only one problem, that was due to BT internet going down so it lost scheduling from Tados web servers for an hour until the connection came back up; it defaulted to hot water fully on and temperature to previous set point. Manual control was still possible on the thermostat so not terrible thankfully.

Quite keen to try the smart rad valves when they are released in 2016 as this is one feature I wish I had that Evohome does out the box (££££).

If you look at alot of the Hive customer feedback its great when it works but obviously not when it doesn't for which British Gas then get really knocked by the customer which is understandable. I think sometimes what users don't understand is the likes of Hive is only as good as the Internet connection so if you live in a rural area with a poor connection then it has an impact. The only thing that annoys me with the Hive is they appear to use the customer as beta testers for any app changes and they don't seem to test any new app releases thoroughly enough which can be buggy until sorted. Also when there are problems with the App or Hive itself they don't update their online Hive Status page at the time of the problem which I've moaned to them about. When there are any problems I've have to visit their Twitter or Facebook Pages for any info.

Tim.

To be fair to BG I had to call them twice and their held desk is very good. Even on a Sunday evening at 20:30 when I though they would be closed. The person on the other end stayed on the line until the issue was fixed, seems to be how they work, so I can't fault them for the Hive. Don't use them for anything else though.

If you don't have the rad control, what is the main benefit of a Hive type product - isn't it then just a remote controlled central thermostat?

At a basic level of course it is. Just has a lot more programmes and flexibility compared to a traditional stat.
Wifi control when away, more on/off settings, etc.
Combined with rad controls it becomes a smart system.

Thanks jeeper that's good to hear re BG customer service, I've never had to call them directly, as said it's just when they release new App updates that problems arise.

Main reason I went for Hive was mainly the cost and to replace an ancient timer and thermostat which is does perfectly. It's bonus for me is when it's cold and away from home and unsure exactly what time I will be back so just a convenient way to heat the house up more precisely and so it's warm when I walk through the door.
