N52 Waterpump fail symptoms and fault code?

So you reckon then Andy that it would be better cost wise to buy the new parts myself as you have done, then hand them over to the indy to fit? Assuming they are okay with doing that, of course.

If it helps, I'm pretty sure there's no customs malarkey with Autodoc. But you may have to wait 10 days or so for delivery.

I know that my indy gets a bit skittish about this, apparently in the past they have been given parts that subsequently failed and had to do the work again at their own cost.

I'll need to hang off until next week until I can ask my indy if they are okay with me buying the parts and supplying them. I've got to the point now where I just want the car back on the road and fixed so if it's a case of it being 1 or 2 hundred quid more expensive then I'll probably just bite the bullet and take the hit in order to get the Z back in use. As I alluded to in my earlier posts, timing for the pump to fail couldn't have been any worse - with a house move in 3 weeks time and all the associated solicitors and estate agents costs but its also a hassle in respect of the car being sat here at my current place not able to drive it currently so trying to juggle getting it in to get fixed locally before we move to the new house which is 35 miles away.

Never rains but it bloody pours, eh?!!

That’s probably the most cost effective way but as FF has said some places are wary of doing it. Mine is very reluctant to do cheap parts but with this I’ll leave the boxes sealed so he’ll know he’s dealing with new genuine parts. We have an understanding that if the part fails it, or the removal/refit aren’t his responsibility.

For info, he was quoting almost twice the price for the same parts through his regular supplier. But as you say in your circumstances you are prepared to pay a premium just to get it sorted because of everything else going on. Mine is in my daily but I’m still WFH so sitting a bit longer didn’t bother me

Cheers, aye.....head bloody spinning at the moment trying to get ready for the move :headbang: My Z4 isn't my daily, bought it for a bit of fun when I can't get out on either of the bikes and also to reduce the mileage on my daily which is on a PCP deal with mileage limits. I'm also mostly working from home so no rush here either :)

They’re more crafty on that site!

Car booked in to local BMW indy for next Weds to get hooked up to their diagnostic system to pinpoint what the issue is, they will do a full health check on it too.

Looking forward to getting it back on the road, but not looking forward to the bill :(

Just got back from my mechanic, the work has cost me just over £535 in total.

They went with a Gates water pump which haven’t been talked about much on here, but doing a bit of research they’re a pretty legit company having been in the business for 100+ years! A pump from them cost my guy £350 quid and it was only an hour and a half job.

I also got a bit of hydraulic tappet noise (lifter tick for Americans) immediately after my overheat and immediately after starting up at the mechanic, but this went away after my 30 mile drive back.

I forgot to mention an hour’s diagnostics, he charges 87. You had me double checking for a moment!

That doesn't sound too bad. My BMW Indy charged me £541.20 for a new pump and some anti-freeze in May 2018 on my E91 325i (same N52 engine) as the diagnostic and bleed procedure probably take half an hour! Much less painful than the £800+ bill I got from him in 2016 for my first E86 - but he did buy a pump and thermostat from BMW, before he knew better. :o

If your car had been sat for a while the top-end ticking seems normal on N52 engines, but doesn't seem to cause any damage and usually goes away after a decent drive.

Yeah, it had been doing a lot of short journeys as well while my other half's Mini was out of action so that probably contributed, as well as being stood since last Friday at the mechanic. I think the overheat may have contributed to the tick as it only started occurring immediately after, while getting the car on and off recovery trucks.

For posterity, this thread on E90post has a video showing the lifter tick noise exactly as I heard on mine: https://www.e90post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1472621

It did go away after the 30-odd mile shot up the A14/M6 to home, on that drive I was quite gentle with it as I hadn't heard the tappety noise before and frankly was worried something worse could have been wrong! From what I've read, if it goes away after a decent drive it's not an issue, if it's persistently tappety get it checked.

Wee update. Had my car towed to my BMW indy this morning. They have just called to confirm that my coolant pump has indeed failed. They have quoted me for the following:-

  • Supply fit and replace coolant pump
  • Supply fit and replace thermostat
  • Flush system and replace coolant
  • Supply fit and replace leaking oil filter housing
  • Carry out engine oil and filter change

The water pump and thermostat are genuine BMW parts. The oil filter housing gaskets I knew were weeping slightly so I asked them to do it whilst they had the car in. Due an oil and filter change too so thought I may as well get it all done at the one time then fingers crossed, that's peace of mind for the coming Spring/Summer season for me. I intend changing the spark plugs and the air filter as well as the DISA valves and the Vanos in the next month or two so I'm ready for the road this summer.

Anyway, been quoted just over £1400 all inclusive including the diagnostics and vehicle health check for all of the above which I thought was fairly reasonable especially given the fact that time wise I haven't the capacity to do the work. It will be ready to pick up on Friday afternoon. Fairly pleased with the quote - a big bill but I'm just looking forward to getting it back on the road.

She's back!!!

Picked her up this afternoon, first class job by my indy. So happy to be back in the drivers seat, heated function was handy today as I couldn't resist putting the top down :D

No more water pump issues for me now.

Cheers, Andy. Yours all sorted now too?

Final bill was a bitter one to swallow but he used a genuine BMW pump, thermostat and oil filter housing so overall, not too bad. Great service too, would thoroughly recommend O'Neill Motors in Rosyth. Mike and his guys know their stuff when it comes to BMW's.

I hadn’t got round to arranging it with my Indy as I don’t need the car right now, going in the end of next week (I think) put it on the CTEK yesterday to make sure no battery problems.

If you’re happy with the bill and service that’s all that matters.

Mine is the same pump as yours without the BMW stamp on the casing, both made by Pierburg  Did they use a BMW thermostat too?
