(or my 330i) where the engine is buried in the bulkhead

That’ll be exactly why mine is going to my Indy

It’s an easy job on the e85 si cars, i helped to change one on a 35is & it was a nightmare - it’s certainly jammed in there! :o

Mine is being taken to a mechanic I trust today and it'll be worked on through the week. They're going to check and confirm it is the water pump and change as appropriate.

I'll update the thread with costs once the work has been done, but from their particular supplier I was told over the phone a new water pump is a £600 part. It's a big money job, but worth it for keeping these cars going!

After the pump died on my first E86 I drove it about 2.5 miles from a cold start to my Indy and the temperature gauge never got close to the Red - less than a mile shouldn't be a problem.

Access on a Z4 is much easier than on a 130i (or my 330i) where the engine is buried in the bulkhead!

I had the same experience in my e86, mine went on the way to work (sudden jump in temp) I pulled over off the motorway, let the car cool and done several switch off and restarts and all was fine I was able to get to work (6 or 7 miles) without incident (temps normal). The car was taken into the garage that day (about a 10mile or so drive) and again the temps were ok. I think I was lucky in the sense that it wasnt a complete failure and was instead on the way out, I kept the RPM minimal and was totally fine, that was 20k miles ago. Iirc I paid my specialist about 600-650 for mine to be done.

I see your location is Fife, Flyingfifer........out of interest, which specialist indy did you use to get the work done? I'm in Dunfermline and have been recommended a place in Rosyth who are Audi/VAG/BMW specialists.

I've used them the whole time I've had the Coupe

Cool, cheers. Yes....they were mentioned too. Its O'neills Motors in Rosyth I was recommended by another Fife Z4 owner on a Facebook page.

See my earlier post re sourcing the part. There’s also the thermostat on top of that price. The pump is a Pierburg and you can get the exact same pump without the BMW fot half the price you’ve been quoted

Even if you want to go ECP etc it’ll still save you £200 based on prices when I bought mine.

it was a nightmare

That’s my exact thoughts Rob, that’s why I’ll happily let someone else deal with it and it’s snowing here too so nightmare and loss of feeling in my fingers doesn’t bode well

I'm going to ask at my indy next week what they will charge for a water pump. Given the Pierberg is the 'go to' pump to swap out a faulty one for and can be picked up for £290 from Autodoc online and similar places I'd like to think that an indy would be around the same price.

Overall it is supposed to take around an hour and a half or so (15 to 20 mins of which will be the auto bleed time) I'd expect around £120 ish for a labour charge. That's what I'd roughly expect cost wise, I'll also update here what my indy will charge. I'm also getting a thermostat fitted too so Flyingfifer's invoice there looks about right, price wise.

Mine was on the way out around 60k-ish. I would turn the car on and the fan would come on straight away, then after a couple of restarts it would go away. A bit of investigation and then a code read and it was new pump time.

Well, in the last few minutes mine has arrived :yeah:

So total cost is £248.81 + £65.09 customs etc grand total £313,90 plus say £15 for coolant so approx around £330 for parts and going by FF”s bill about 2 hrs labour which with my Indy will be around £100 so £430 approx all in hopefully. This is including a new thermostat as I’m not sure if some of the prices being quoted on the thread are just for the pump. FF’s has it included in his

TBH, I’d be surprised if your Indy would be anywhere near that price.

One of the cheapest ones I’ve found here are carparts4less and today with discount is £451. I’d be expecting any Indy to be putting a markup on these, which could be around 20%. The other thing for comparison here is this isn’t for a Mahle thermostat that’s recommended with the Pierburg pump.

AUTODOC are pretty close today to what I paid

There may be slight variations between the Z4 and the E90 but all in all they’re the same engine and share a majority of engine parts

Nice one!
Thats a really good price all in :D

Yeah I’m happy with that price Wullie, was struggling at the time to get a U.K. based one anywhere close. AUTODOC weren’t offering as good a discount when I was ordering and the seller I used had been recommended on the forum before

Now I just need to break the news to my Indy that it’s here
