My Second Zed Thread (2010 E89 sDrive30i)

Interesting what you mentioned about the auto gearbox adaptations, I wonder if Carista has that setting too. I too find the response / changes in sport mode a bit jerky and or not really very smooth.

Managed my first proper drive out yesterday in about 6 weeks - the kind of drive just to burn petrol and no other reason, very good for the soul.

Massive improvement on the gearchange - I had it in sport mode probably 90% of the 1 hour blast, and didn't get a single lurchy gear change. Before, gear changes on full throttle were nice and snappy (possibly seem 'slower' now if that is at all possible?) but changes on partial throttle really did come with a pronounced lurch - now completely gone.

Bit of googling suggests this may just be temporary, but I'd love to understand the process behind it all - and yes, if Carista doesn't support it I'd definitely recommend seeking out an alternative (or a friendly Spanish Carly ower perhaps).

You could pop over to the UK, I'll reset the adaptations while you do my instrument cluster LED mod :poke:

You will have to come here first to get your rear bumper sprayed!

Somewhere down the long list of mods I have planned, is the XHP Flash tool. From what I have heard it does wonders for both the older ZF6HP gearbox and the newer ZF8HP. Makes gear changes quicker and makes Sport mode way better and more useable without any of those lurches etc.

It doesn’t appear to support the E89 ZF8HP box at the moment?

Yes you are right, I just checked it. Seems only to support the 30i ZF6HP in E89s right now. However I did read somewhere in their documentation that if your car isn't supported to contact their support and they will try to add it.

There seems to be an issue with the E89 ZF8HP box re-maps..I see Celtic offers a similar re-map of many ZF boxes but the E89 is conspicuous by its omission?

Maybe they are just reselling XHP's files hence the same cars are supported. I would contact XHP support direct and ask them if they can do it for the ZF8 in the E89.

Replaced the near side rear light over the weekend, as mine has clearly been leaking internally - so much so that a load of moss/mould had grown inside - yuck.

Removed the light using Flybobbie's most excellent Youtube guide, here:

Outside (Aston Martin lookalike?) and inside view on removal:

Here's where I got a bit confused - my old light, note the left had side empty bulb hole; the black one in my hand is from the replacement light (from a 2012 4 pot) and removes completely (the same way as the right hand most bulb does in the old light, not pictured), whereas the white one in the old one pulls out but is attached by the 2 wires as you can see. Didn't think anything of this design change, but when calling on Mrs BoyBunter to do some basic light checks before reassembling everything, she reported only one of the 2 brake lights were working in the new cluster. Sure enough, plugging the old one in just resting in the boot lit both sides on braking.

Here's a stock image, you can see the black version of the plug on the left hand side:

And my new unit installed:

I checked the left had side bulb (the one in my hand) and it looked a bit dodgy, so swapped the whole unit out (both the bulb and the holder) with the RIGHT hand side bulb from my old unit as it's the same design - no difference, it didn't light up.

Perplexed, a bit annoyed, I put everything back together again safe in the knowledge the car was still legal - and here it is: visually at least it looks far better, nice and clean again.

Happily, I just took a short video in the dark so I could properly see the lights working and everything seems to be working fine - so either Mrs BoyBunter was mistaken (it was very bright so difficult to see what was lighting up and what wasn't, in her defense) or me fiddling around with the connections made them spring into life.

My new unit also only had 2 mounting points, whereas my original had 3. I was expecting this having read about it before - but as the 2 orange coloured mounting points are just self tappers into the headlight case plastic, I just removed the old one and screwed it into the new housing - can't see anything wrong with this approach and having washed the car today no water has appeared anywhere, will keep an eye out though.

Ha, maybe - went a couple of weeks ago, taken a while to get here. In good shape though

Enjoy, I set myself a limit (as we alway do ) and for once stuck to it!

Tips cleaned up nicely. Don't fancy crawling under the car so garage is fitting on Wednesday.

I know aftermarket exhausts are a bit marmite but I'm more excited than a 42 year man has any business being

When you stop feeling excited ,it's time to put the lid down on the box.How do you slip all these mods pass the boss? :D

She puts up with me :D

To be fair though, if you buy 2nd hand and are patient enough to wait for a good price, most mods can be sold on at a later date with zero loss making this quite a cheap hobby relatively.

For example: M-sport wheel, set of alloys, Smart top, M-sport bumper, cruise, exhaust - will all come off whenever the car is sold.

Actual spend on the car I won't get back is fairly low (main exception being tyres, but that's par for the course) - though that will change with some preventative maintenance coming up.

 Totally agree, prices are becoming more reasonable as more cars are going through the breakers now. When I bought mine it didn't exactly have the spec I exactly wanted, but the low mileage, idrive etc out weighted the other bits which I knew I could replace at a later date. I've been fortunate finding what I wanted in excellent condition and managing to then move on some of my old stuff to balance out the cost. So far its cost me £380 for my sport seats and sport steering wheel with the newer paddles (that includes the refurb at Royals)..... I still have the whippy in the garage, can't see anyone wanting one of them

You have been lucky! So far every time I try the breakers for something they seem to think they are selling gold judging by the stupid prices they quote me. :(

I did have an Msport steering wheel on order a few months ago but when it turned up they had sent me an older style tatty steering wheel instead, when I rang them up they said the other was damaged and they thought that Id be happy with that, think they realised they sold it too cheap!

Exhaust fitting went without issues - cost £95 including a couple of clamps.

Very pleased with the result - had a couple of evening drives making the most of the crazy weather this week, one of which included Cheddar gorge and the sound bouncing off all the steep rocks was fantastic :D

Overall, it's way noisier at pootling around speeds, less so at WOT. Also a bit more of a 'refined' noise if that makes sense - the standard exhaust had a good rasp to it at idle and when starting the car, the Remus has lost the rasp and sounds a bit more menacing.

Original exhaust:

And Youtube clip: (for both of these you'll either need earphones or the TV cranked up quite loud - otherwise it just sounds like a Corsa)

Remus fitted: (excuse dirty car)

Already polarizing opinion with my friends - people seem to love/hate it with equal enthusiasm

For what it's worth, I really like it - but haven't taken it on the motorway yet. The only thing that irks me slightly is the Remus does not have the same 'downward' angle that the original exhaust has which follows the bumper line; the 2 pipes are staggered like the original so the line left to right is the same, but not top to bottom (so the bottom of the pipe sticks out more, compared to the original - if that makes sense. You can see quite easily comparing the pics above).

Now you will definitely need to drive the car down to here, I need to hear it for real!
