Machine monkeys zed

Not sure I have driven the car with the pore steering not working. It was far to heavy but that might have been down to the motor still being engaged?

BIG BLUE calipers

Just wish i could fit them and try them this weekend

They look really bad in the picture but they are good in person.

And the bleed nipples will come out and get a clean up!!

Ooooo I'd love some bigger brakes on mine

I sometimes get the sticky steering issue but only when I have the heater directed into the footwell so the column gets hot. It can be irritating but I've got useto it I think.

I've also driven with the pas turned off... Far too heavy!

I thought you where moving on Gav?

Mine is worse as you describe it. But it seems to be there most of the time. Like the motor is always moving left right a bit. It's not tracking alignment or anything else like bushes as it's all new and been checked. This is the the last thing to change.

I think it would be better with the motor removed.

So I spent the whole day Saturday at the workshop... And got next to nothing done to my car

I did help a forum member out buy welding on 2 exhaust tips to there 2.0l z4 and that looks a lot better!! And we got a fair bit of work done on the supra.

The z4 now has no front brakes and i have a set of new front hubs on order so that i can make these big brembo calipers fit. To my surprise they very nearly go straight on. The alignment and spacing is perfect. And the caliper bolt holes and the lugs on the spindle are only half a hole out. so i will be cutting welding and strengthening the new spindle lugs when they arrive. I am hoping to get that done this week and fit them this Saturday.

And hopefully i can convince Chris to get the supra off the ramp and my z4 on the ramp so I can do the steering rack.

nice! im going to try refurb/paint my 2nd hand 330 calipers that came today when i get home, cant wait as they make such a good visual difference (aswell as the added performance) :D

Take your time and make sure the calipers are really clean.

Yeah they should look better. But its the upgraded performance i am after. I have had trouble with the brakes at track days. I am hopping its not going to be too much on the front! I suspect i will be having to do something with the rears soon. Hopefully i will be able to just get supper stick pads on the back.

yea im gonna give them a good clean up and then get a new seal pack and have a look and see if new pistons are required before giving them a fresh lick of red paint :D cant wait!

Yeah I think I love the z4 too much to let it go just yet, everyone kept telling me I was mental for wanting to sell which didn't help  so I'm going to add some changes again for this year and see how that leaves me feeling.

I'm not sure on the turns but my mate might have a steering rack off a e46 touring and the column if you need options, haven't a clue if it would work though

I think keeping it is a wise idea

Well I think I have everything I need for steering conversion. I will hopefully find out this coming weekend if it works or not. That and the brakes and the new adjustable rear ARB. Then i will get the the alignment sorted and hopefully she will drive great.

Very exciting times for me at the moment. Every week i seem to have another second hand part that dose not quite fit my car. I am not sure even if i did have lots of cash to spend on my car i would. I really do enjoy the challenge of solving a problem. Getting what i want for not a lot of ££££

So the spindles arrived.

So the thing no is i have to get all 3 of these bits to work together. And obviously clean and paint and make it all shiny.
The problem is this

The spacings for the disc caliper alignment seems spot on. The problem is the bolt holes dont line up. So my plan is to cut the spindles and weld on new sections the correct length with the right bolt hole size. weld it all back together with some extra bracing to be sure its nice and strong.

It's a cast steel piece...
No safe welding on that I think, unless you heat the whole thing up to +800deg or so.

Normally for these kinds of conversions calipers with an angular mounting are used, so you can make a different carrier.
But these calipers are carrier-less

Try to adapt the calipers, or re-weld on the calipers (aluminium)

I hear your concerns and i have them also.
I am hatching a plan to rely on all the existing bolt holes. And making a funky bracket and then welding that also. Nothing wrong with welding cast material its just doing it right. Guys are doing it all the time in the drift world.

But I fully appreciate what your saying. This is a brake component. And i shall not be bodging or cutting corners.

I wouldn't rely on guys in the drift world and more on real professionals. Nofi on drift world guys, but by professionals I mean welding that has to be certified, like in shipping by lloyds, dnv or such an enviroment. A drift car isn't even a road legal object.
And in that enviroment if a cast should be welded, it's always heated and controlled temp down. There is a stress free nickel welding rod for cast iron, but that is really just to weld in little areas (like cast imperfections) that arent really critical to loads.
So I would definately only weld on the aluminium caliper and not on the cast steering knuckle.

Glad to see you finally made use of the brakes Matt! I'm sure a bit of clever bracketry design will make them work?

It's not possible to mill a flat on where the lugs of the calipers are? and then drill a hole through or maybe a blind hole with thread insert?
That way you can make an angular bracket what is normally used.

And I still would beadblast the calipers and give them a nice spray paint (all around). tbh the current paintjob in the pictures doesnt do your usual work justice. You're clearly not a painter, you're a machinist

You can definitely do that with a 17Z or 18Z caliper, not sure there's enough meat on those Alfa ones

Ha ha your right painting is not my thing. In my defense i was rushing in a lunch brake. Sandblasting and starting again is probably a good option.
