Machine monkeys zed

So its been a while since i have posted. Well not much has happened with my car been too busy working on this http://www.z4-forum.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=16&t=83042

My roof is still broke :(
But i am acquiring pats.
Just got the H&R rear sway bar off hear. So that will help as i have done the M3 front upgrade.
I have 330 touring brake discs and a set of big 4 pot Brembo calipers
A little oil cooler to go on.
And i have just become the proud owner of a purple tag steering rack and all the ancillaries needed. So i can convert my car to a proper steering system. The best bit of all it only cost £100 for the lot.

So i have much to do. The only trouble being the Super Supra build will be taking much of our time.

How are you going to mount the oil cooler? (where will you hook up the lines?)

And you're going to convert to hydraulic steering?

Well they are good questions. And i cant give you 100% answers to them yet. But i am thinking of mounting it on the front crash bar behind one of the kidneys its only a small oil cooler. Connecting it up well i am sure i will be making a sandwich plate of some sort.

Yes i am ditching the electric steering. Its been done on hear so it should be straight forward I hope. And fingers crossed gives me the steering feel i want/had in other BMWs

Not sure yet mate. I haven't even got to it or my car yet

Hopefully a big push this weekend on the supra. Then marking up cutting and welding the gearbox in that next weekend. I am hopping i can strong arm Chris into working on my car while i am doing that for him.

It had been a bit slow. But moving forward with mechanical work now. Chris and I had had enough body work. Should have the ecu system by this weekend.

Not many places to mount a sandwichplate. Usually it is done either by mounting an m3 oil filter housing (has build in thermostat and outlet ports for a cooler) and use an AN10 adapter for that (multiple manufacturers afailable), or an adapter plate to fully ditch the oil filter housing and use an external filter etc, or a new oilfilterhousing cap with outlet ports and a separate thermostat.
A sandwichplate between the oilfilterhousing isn't possible because there is a pulley mounted on the oilfilterhousing.

I wanted to go the way of the m3 oil filter housing (I already have one with all the stuff), but my compressor snout sits in the way of the outletport.
So I have to figure a way to adapt that port.

You don't expect a lot of esp errors etc? You plan on keeping the eps steering column and remove the electric motor or something like that?

Yeah I have read and looked at pictures of the m3 route. As usual i dont want to spend any more cash than i have to. I haven't actually looked at it yet. But it cant be that hard to make something up. I will be taking a close look this weekend when i am back near my car. coming up with a plan. If your interested in what i make and if it will work for your application i could make another? I wish i had the problem of my compressor getting in the way!!

Thats the plan use the standard column and just remove the motor. I will have a look at this suspect plastic spacer ring (bush) at the bottom of the column too. I will probably make a brass one to replace it. My thinking is that this expands quicker with heat than the shaft and housing and causes some of the sticky steering problem any way. So i am hopping for no faults and any i have to be codded out by a friend on hear. And to end up with no sticky steering and proper steering feel.

So hear facebook and eBay have been my friends this week.

Got the H&R rear sway bar from dannyg-m3 from hear
Got the bits for the steering convertion off Facebook
And got some big brembo calipers from eBay
All in £275 couldn't be happier to have a pile of dirty bits to clean up in my lunch brakes next week.

That was a productive lunch brake. The rack needs another clean and i haven't touched the calipers. That is for lunch and coffee brake tomorrow. But the rest came up quite nice.

have you measured the widht of the rack?
So the distance between where the tie rods are screwed in.

That has to be exactly the same as the current rack. If it's not, then you get different alignment in corners and on bumps, under braking etc (every instance that the suspension is compressed or extended.

But a very interesting project.
Do you know how much quicker this rack is compared to the stock rack.
I don't have any problems with the current feel of the eps, but a quick rack would be something I'd like to have.

Simple answer is no mate.
Its all trial and error. Suck it sand see if you know what i mean. The bits cost £100 if it fails and dose not work for what ever reason at least i will know.

There will be lots of measuring and checking on Saturday. I have lots of fabrication work to do for the Supra project i am working on. But my mate Chris (he is a much better than me with cars) Will be taking a look at this for me/with me.

Its 2.5 turns lock from lock so i think the same? I have the sticky steering problem and i have been chasing other things since i have owned the car. Everything else is perfect. But i have never had confidence in the steering feel. I really hope this works and fixes the problem.

If it dose not i shall be moving on to another car.

Yes you can always sell the purple tag rack.
I have no idea how much turns lock to lock the EPS rack is.

The sticky steering problem is pretty easily solved by rotating the eccentric adjuster ring that sits between the electric motor and the rack.
That ring adjusts the tolerance between the wormscrew on the electric motor and wormgear on the steering rack.
You can loosen and adjust the ring without removing the complete steering column; so from within the footwell. Something to do in your next lunch break
It can take a few adjustments to get it right but usually it's a 100% fix. They figured it out on the german Z forum (loads of techies there)
Makes you wonder why bmw didn't solve it. They probably liked the £1500 for a steering column...

Ha ha yeah i have heard of just moving the ring or making a new one. It was an option.

But the car still dose not have the steering feel my 323 had. It was one of the best things about the car. And after driving an M in October. And obviously they have a hydraulic system. I made up my mind to do this as the M felt right as did the 323. Well to me anyway maybe its all in my head? But i hope this works and makes me happy. As i am not happy with it at the moment.
