M6 - Should I consider it?

OK - so a bit of tyre kicking with a semi serious interest to replace my ageing X5. Purpose is a large comfortable motorway eather seats 4 and carries luggage.

Been looking at a few M6 and they seem incredible value right now. £86 new before you add anything, so really a £100k car nicely specced out

Less than £30k gets a main agent 2006. £25k from secondary trader. Insurance for me and Mrs CJ is around £700 fully comp. MPG is the same as the X5, so it's tax, service and depreciation only. Reckon I could trade for £10 - £15k after haggling

From accounts I've read, you're looking at 10-12mpg when giving it some. Serious thirst.

I'd imagine servicing is a bit of a fortune, too. A warranty would be an absolute must, for me, too.

Still, the engine noise from a V10 would be epic. :thumbsup: But considering it shares the same engine as the M5, is it worth the price increases? Though initial purchasing prices look to be similar, admittedly.
 
For me it'd have to be an M5 Touring - but I've got a Z4MC instead as I went through a similar choice 18 months ago and was put of by stories of potential financial ruin - from both owners & specialists.

Saying that, they are superb motorway munchers and go like stink with any throttle input, but the feedback from the wheels & steering can be a bit distant ;-)

BTW, if you don't want an auto, there is a cheap manual on BMW national search - in Sepang Bronze. Or you've got the choice of 650i Sports from £23k.
 
Ouch, now that's what I call depreciation! That linked example seems remarkable value given the original cost - although I can't say I know much about the values of these sort of cars.

Certainly fits your purpose of being a lrage motorway curiser capable of seating 4 adults and carrying their luggage. Not sure on the ride comfort though? Makes a far more interesting cost to a 1-2 year old 330i Coupe, that's for sure...

As long as you can afford the running costs then why not? Certainly something with more doors and less power, i.e. cheaper running costs, would be more sensible, but life's not about always being sensible :D. Saying that you do still have the Z4 for thrills so could you not settle for a cheaper-to-run car to replace the X5, rather than an M6.
 
Is your X5 petrol 3.0i? I had heard from BMW forum members that some M5/M6 have ongoing engine and gearbox problem. BMW Insured Warranty is a must-have monthly cost if you want to keep running cost predictable.

One M5 owner said "My car is back in the dealers again this friday for more vanos faults. Since september it has been in the dealers five times for one thing and another. The most serious being a vanos fault diagnosed as the vanos high pressure oil pump - a massive job to replace and cost around £5000 under warranty and eight days in the workshop, this was just last month.
The same vanos noise is back and it has been diagnosed as the left bank having a failure so it will be getting a complete new vanos unit replacement. Probably another week away and another £5000 or so to fix under warranty. Since september and including this coming visit the warranty would have stumped up around £13000 in repairs - oh, and it only has 24500 miles.
The vanos oil pump runs at a crazy 1640psi so that may be a reason why they fail and because mine was shonky then this could have been a contributing factor to the left bank vanos going tits up. "

M5/M6 are cheap to buy, but the fuel and maintenance costs are not justified for daily use.
 
ksher - yes 3.0i petrol so I know all about fuel bills.

I think a full warranty woudl have to be included as a given.

Depreciation is the big killer on high end cars these days and I'm uniquely positioned to be ablet to maintain them with relative ease so the delaers don't get to see me much :)

Perhaps I'll look wider afield at a less powerful variant and see what that throws up. After all do I needa 5 litre V10?

Locally a 650i convertible is up for £22k
 
I was also considering 630i Sport coupe before ordering E89. But most cars come with 19" wheels, and rear wheels will crack for sure (not covered by warranty). I like the sport automatic gearbox on later model. IIRC you wanted a 6-series diesel.

Never specifically been after a diesel but these days I'm much less adverse to them than say a decade ago.

Interesting thet athe rear rims crack :thumbsdown:

Did the M5 and M6 come with a manual box? I thought they were flappy paddle only
 
First off, a slight moment of anxiety when I saw the thread title!

Thing that would stop me from getting an M6 is the M5, which I prefer the look of. But, I'm not in the market!

Broken record... for that size of car, at around that price, I'd consider...

Friend has one, looks stunning, great engine and the supercharger is insane! That said, the standard V8 although not as fast sounds even nicer... as was pointed out by the friend with the R! They are a lot better built than the old models too. Finish of the interior was very impressive. Also, I am sure there are a lot more 6 series about.

They were available with a manual in the US, and as I'd specifically searched for a manual I didn't realise they'd simply stuck them all under the 'manual' category.
The Sepang one I was on about was this one.
 
Friend of mine has a Jag the same. Still he's wealthy and buys new runs them for 2 years and takes the £30k depreciation each time. If I were stepping up to that sort of car I'd get an Aston every day - just for the badge and grille.

mmm-five - again a lot of car there for the price :)

Nice but read about plenty "red cog of death" stories (SMG gearbox failure). 645 or 650 would be nice too.
 
Ahhhhhh an M6. Big, big car, but moves with uncommon agility. I've driven one at each of the M club days I've done at the Performance center in SC. If you push it like we were, 6 mpg is generous. That said, what a sound!!!!!! We ran them in the rat race (wet pavement, run around in a circle with no DSC and in M sport mode-fun!). I can't recommend it highly enough. Outside of the car is large, but interior feels nice and snug. Not practical at all, but was it ever meant to be?

The real sleeper car is an M5. Same bhp as M6, but I think it's lighter in weight and who gives a 4 door sedan a second look? :driving: The M5 seems to be the preferred car of the staff at the performance center.
 
that looks like one hell of a cruiser CJ!

You do realise that you wont be able to carry an ikea wardrobe in it like you can an x5 though :poke:
