M Steering wheel.

Thanx wondermike :D

Just got in from a nice cruise round and the wheel feels completly different in a good way, Its much chunkier and is finished in a different material. Adds atleast 10bhp and in a odd way makes me drive faster

CJ you already had the MF buttons though didn't you? That might be the difference I'm going to call the garage that turned on the key functions for me to see if they can have a look but I don't know if its something you turn on in a menu or if you have to input code.

csmith starscream is a member and the non iluminated one cost me about £50 I think :)

This is an extract from the MFB instructions.

Code:
6. Concluding work and coding
This retrofit system requires coding.
- Connect the battery
- Encode/program the retrofit using DISPlus or GT-1 via path Retrofit/CIP
- Conduct a brief test
- Conduct a function test
- Re-assemble the car
The circuit diagram for the multi-functional steering wheel connection is available in DISPlus or
GT-1 if required.

No - I had a plain steering wheel and retrofitted in one with both the MFSW and paddle shifts. I went the hard route too with no oem wiring in place for either

Hmm thats interesting! I will have to pop the airbag out and check if I pushed it in all the way and maybe look and see if the rest of the looms are in! There is definitely the pins in the socket to plug into.

Sure check you pushed the connector in, but I'm sure you did.

You could not have checked the pins and wires into the green socket on the rear of the slip ring, unless you removed the lower cowl and counted the wires or pulled the plug out to check the pins (plug X10170 pins 9&10). For sure you would have had the pins on the RHS of the upper face of the slip ring where you connected to. (Hope that makes sense)

Here's my pics finally. Not exactly a step by step as I didn't do the whole process on my own and jeeper had it done in minutes.

Not had any functional problems with mine, although I already had the MFSW buttons.
I'm not sure what material it's covered in, it looks like a very fine grain leather but feels more like material, kind of a wetsuit style fine mesh (although it's obviously not a mesh material) I like it's slightly padded feel a lot
On the whole the wheel is a improvement for me, but it would be nice if it was fractionaly less chunky, I can't imagine anyone ever wanting something fatter :driving:

Nice...

Not a mod I think I'll be doing though...

I think it's the chrome spokes I miss the most, but it's softer grippier touch offsets the slight fatness downsides for pure finger hugging grip that the thinner original one offers.

I look forward to some longer-term reports of how you are both finding the change vs the original :)

I will look at the plug and see what's there cj if the loom is missing I might require some help on how to Reno e the various bits of trim :) I think I will make the looms myself if I can source the correct pins.

Herminator I couldn't agree more about the wetsuit feel material. It feels great and my hands fit perfectly in the groves by the buttons. Perfectly designed!

Hardly worth it as you can buy the harness as a seperate part B61.12.0.394.848 at £4.94
If you prefer you can buy pins B61.13.0.005.198 at 90p

Haha you know so much its amazing :D

Well if thats the case I will order the loom if required! I thought knowing BMW it would be some stupid price. I was clearly wrong.

Nargh - just that I went through it and my parts guy had 20+ years in the dept. and can find bits like that in an instant

Sounds good! I've got the pins now so just got to get to the back of the LCM. Going to see if I can work out how.

There are no cables in pins 9/10 so hopefully once I've got this in it should all work ok :)

Just an update on this :)

The part number for the pins is for males not females but the other part number seems correct. The loom needs to come from Germany so I'm waiting on that. In the mean time for anyone else planning this its easy to run the cable.

To remove the LCM simply pull the ally trim off and then remove the two screws. The LCM simply pulls out.

Just got to wait for the loom now and then hopefully the buttons will work!

Here are some pics of the interior after a clean:

CJ10jeeper did you use normal this http://www.maplin.co.uk/Module.aspx?ModuleNo=43076 sort of crimp to splice in with pins 21 and 27?

Thanx!

Sorry - been to Oulton Park all day so you may already have this sorted.

Take the speedo housing out then reach though and take the LCM cable connector off. you can then add the pins to that end too route the cable up and ad them the the airbag connector on the column. The PDF has all the socket and pin numbers

Hey Phil :)

Seems we replied at the same time! The pins were males not feemale so I'm waiting for the loom to arrive from Germany. Did you use this http://www.maplin.co.uk/Module.aspx?ModuleNo=43076 sort of crimp to splice the new loom in with pin 21 & 27 on the LCM plug.

Thanx for all your help!!

Def did not use any scotchloks (hate them) for the MFSW I just used the loom Part 'H' Can't even remember if they are male or female but it was all very obvious once I had the 2 respective plug out and the loom to hand. IIRC you split the plug outer off and simply click in the new males on one and females on the other. Apologies but it's a year since I did this and I also did the paddle shifts at the same time that I had to make a loom for.

Just an update incase anyone was considering this mod. I finially got round to sorting the buttons today, all you need is the loom mentioned above and some decent connections and it works fine!

Great Mod :D

Delighted you got it sorted. Seems that as with so many of these mods it's the quality of the connection :)

Great feeling when you get an OEM solution working as a retrofit
