M Steering wheel.

I know what you mean about it being almost too fat. But for me it's a comfort thing, I also like the softer feeling it has, it's quite a change from the solid leather that has gained a bit of a shine from the years of use.

I made sure I sat in the dealerships Z4C when I was in last week and it felt nice to me, but it's definetly a personal thing.

Thanks Jeeper, hopefully it will go according to plan, I see finger strength being the main potential problem, either the main nut will be too tight, or the little plugs will be a pain to connect up
You should come for a drive to Darlo :P

Herminator.
Actually the centre hub bolt is not too tight. Keep the wheel centred so you know where to fit the new one and make sure you leave the bolt in a couple of threads until you are sure the wheel is loose enough to pull off. Nothing is more of a wake up call than a steering wheel in the face....

I actually see the airbag as your biggest issue applying enough force to push the retention springs inwards to release it.

My biggest fear was dealing with the airbag. I disconnected the battery, waited 30 minutes, and treated it like the bomb that it is by making sure that it was always pointing away from me. I had no issues with connectors or the main nut. Good luck!

Thats a thought, pulling the steering wheel off could take quite a bit of force, I better have my weatbix and wear a motorcycle helmet

Yeah, the fatness really is a personal preference.

At first in an Si I thought, hmmm, fat, but I suppose after 20 mins I didn't really notice.

Much like the sports seats. I loved them at the time, but now I can't really remember if they were that much better than the standard ones.

I guess much like anything it's personal preference, but also what you get used to. I'm sure if I fitted one, after four weeks a normal one would feel stupidly skinny :)

Looking forward to the pictures! (ps, what are you doing with the old mfsw?)

Thanks

Dave

Thats fantastic! I am amazed thats how much it costs, its so cheap in comparisons to anywhere with them on the net! Do you have a part number?

I can't wait for pics :D I was thinking about this thread driving home from work

Are the MFSW cables already there even if you don't have the buttons?

Well pics will have to wait a little while, since I picked up a computer virus yesterday and this evening my pc is going through a long virus check :headbang:

I have the airbag popped off though (plus a screw driver stuck down the side of my seat...) but now I need to check how to disconnect the airbag wires without it going off in my face. :poke:

I was planning on keeping the old MFSW.... but for the right offer

It wount just go off by disconnecting the wires. I had the wheel off my c class a few times and it was fine. As long as the keys are not in the ignition your ok.

The mercedes wires had a clamp in the middle of the connector you pull up then they came off with a little force.

Looking forward to the pics! :D

I'm having to admit defeat
Got the connectors off as soon as I went back down for another try, there's a rear plastic piece that pops up on the connector before you can disconnect it, easy when you look at the other wheel.

I've been defeated by the main bolt that's "not too tight" it's as tight as they come, I'm using a rather large T-bar and it's not budging with my meager weight behind it.
I'll just have to reconnect it all and pop the airbag back on until I can get to my usual garage guy. So close, but so far....

What are you talking about Pete???

A technique is to position the ratchet/T bar close to a spoke then you can squeeze the 2 together rather than levering or turn the wheel to full lock then you can use both hands on the T bar rather than 1 trying to hold the wheel

Hmm... I think I've got it so the steering lock is on, ie. it needs the key in it now for the steering wheel to turn.
Would this stop me from undoing the bolt?

No - It's just a bolt. Column lock has nothing to do with it.
Try hitting the T bar with a hammer/mallet if you don't have the strength to lever it safely.

Already tried that but the T bar is too long for it to be effective.
Steering wheel is back on now anyway. I have tomorrow afternoon off, so I'll pop into town to get a helping hand, I'd forgotton my appointment time had been changed, freeing up some time.

Is the overall steering wheel radius any different from M Sport to normal? Ie, is it a smaller or bigger wheel, or the same size just fatter rim?

If I remember correctly. There is a small whit mark to ensure the steering wheel is centered.

I'm surprised that you are having so much trouble removing the nut.

Turning it the wrong way maybe?

Edit: Ah, no, it's the same thread as anything else that is the right way :P

So, any news on the overall radius? Is it actually bigger or smaller overall roundness, or just fatter rimmed?

If it's a tad smaller overall then I might be a bit more interested as I'm finding the standard one maybe a tad larger than I'd like.

Cheers

Dave

If you have a piece of pipe or something you can use to extend the bar it should come off easier. A little extra length makes all the difference  :D
