M&S & Muslim Staff

I've never heard anything so ridiculous in all my life :headbang:

My understanding of the actual facts was that they would not have to take that job if they did not want to, rather than the image which is given now of a shopping trolley full of food where they selectively pass items through the till.

Tbh I read it on bbc, and the headline makes it sound a bit ott. The clerk apologised and was polite about it. So I think it's been blown a bit out of proportion a bit.

Okay I don't agree with the issue, I mean, I don't like gay porn but I'd still scan a magazine if someone wanted to buy it

But customers have already been turned away from tills and asked to go to another till when buying alcohol and meat products.

Seems odd when her wages will partly be made up from the profit of (others within M&S) selling such goods, but that's ok :? .

So it's the last minute X-mas rush, you pop into M&S for a bottle of bubbly, the express till isn't too bad so you take that one only to be told to go to the next till/s where are massive queues! would you be pi$$ed off :x

Just a quick scan through to check for any printing issues, eh? ;)

SO does this mean that you actually tried it to see if you liked it?

By all means don't put staff on tills if they have an issue with certain products, but to embarrass and inconvenience customers with this sort of behaviour is just plain wrong.

Set all issues of religion to one side for a moment, why apply for a job if you know that for some moral reason you can't do it?

It would be like me working in a gun store, I have an issue with guns so I won't be applying to work in one. Simples.

This bangs of a simple mistake by a junior manager/supervisor, we are really short staffed and busy, lets put x on checkout y...... and then the whole world jumps to conclusions.

At least M & S have a policy, that allows diversity in its employees but has the sense not to force alcoholics to work in wines and spirits. If the risk of employing a Muslim is to high for the checkouts then don't recruit them for the food checkouts, which appears to have occurred in this case, hence why I see it as a simple mistake.

I don't blame M & S for having to have this policy, just religious doctrine that refuses to be modernised and just to clarify that's ALL religion

I shall refrain from offering an opinion other than to say this will be publicly reversed within a week and will be one of the biggest PR own goals of 2013.

Your opinions are not that bad that they need public reversals

I didn't think there were any gun stores left in the UK, lots of gin stores but no gun stores.

We have liquor stores here, and whole chains are owned by dark skinned businessmen, with quite a few muslims in the mix. Thpey don't seem to have a problem with selling beer, wine , scotch .... they don't drink it but it's no problem handling or selling it.

I think you are being taken for a bit of a ride ....

McBee has a point - not being sterreotypical, but lots of convenience stores are owned by Muslims, and they have no problem selling alcohol and bacon.
