Lotus Elise circa 2003

Ok firstly sorry for all the 'what car' type posts first off. Have finally begun to sell the z :( But have decided I love it but it's time for a change - I get itchy feet after 4 months let alone 2 years 4 months ish! But it's prooving a tough act to follow. But I find the only opinion really worthwhile when changing car is that of someone who has driven what you're going from and to!

Another car that has made the short list for my next is possibly totally at the other end of the spectrum to the M6 I was asking about last weekend. Love the engine, but after a few people pointing out the jerkyness of the SMG and driving it again, I've decided too big to be the sportscar I'd want, but too uncompromising to be a comfy cruiser (mpg, jerky gearbox, relatively small interior, huge size) Looking at:

10858556_10152427691161829_6878025211837284075_n.jpg

111s, with some tasty carbon bits, exige vents, janspeed exhaust, lotus sport seats and priced VERY well. price allows for supercharging or to hunt around for a supercharged one instead.. Viewing that one tomorrow :)

The elise's have never done it for me previously. I like a big motor with oodles of torque and revs. However the pace due to the weight, especially on the supercharged varients, not to mention the corner speed is worth a second look, and the more I look at them the more I actually think they're v pretty. The lower cost here means that I Could conceivably have one and a vxr8 or similar for the price of the Z, so the lack of comprimise isnt too bad. Can't find any real means to compare the two though in terms of point to point fun. strange side point, as much as the elise gets praised, if I look at track times (top gear (yeah I know far from accurate but still), nurburgring) etc the z4m comes out on top by a margin which hints that handling aside the in gear range must be pretty limited?

Obviously practicality is non-existant which is fine, just wondering if anyone has had one past or present, and if so what you perferred/didn't like? I'm assuming that living with it day to day won't be fun, but are they enjoyable on a/b roads or are they only at home on the track? how are they to drive more casually? Does the obvious difference in power and weight translate to leaving you feeling a bit empty when accelerating at speed? or do they go well whenever? Top end isn't too much of an issue, I tend to be pretty catious on the roads, but am paranoid the 1.8 lumps might be a bit lacklustre through the range.. anyone who went to one, did you keep it, anyone who went for a Z after, do you regret it? any experiences / issues would be awesome

I had an elise for 2 & a half years before I got my zed (check out seloc) one of the best handling cars ever made but without any electronic nannies-beware in the wet as they will bite!
I had a toyota engined variant, the "S" model-only 134hp but as it only weighed 850kg it shot to 60 in 5.8secs. The others are more powerful & even quicker.
I chose the toyota engine due to the shocking reliability from the rover k series lump, headgasket problems are rife although many people love them due to their character & power delivery.
Nothing is better for fun & can be used day to day (mine was my daily driver) but due to the crazy high sills getting in/out is a pain in the butt, especially if you are a larger bloke.
For short journeys popping out to get a paper etc you wouldn't want to bother with it.
They hold their money incredibly well, I sold mine for more than I paid for it after over 2 years!

The zed is a lot more refined with probably 75% of the fun & much more usability due to a proper boot, quiet at cruising speeds & much easier to climb in/out.

but of course you know what LOTUS stands for? ..........

Loads Of Trouble Usually Serious :o

Enjoy :driving: anyway - when you can

I had an Elise a few years back and I did say that if the OH Gets a company car I'm going to try and sell the Z to get another. Great cars! It is one of the best driving experiences ever. Where as my Griffith was like a huntin knife, the Elise was a scalpel. You point it and it just goes. Especially when you get the geometry tweaked. The feed back is immense and the car certainly feels faster than the 3.0 Z4. Especially up to 60-70.

That said the Elise is rear mid engined and very well balanced, until it decides to spin. It will rotate very fast with very little warning. There is no TC or stability control. I remember in chap on the forum who went from his 911 to the 111S and complained that the car was dangerous and he had spun twice off the road where as his 911 and wife's SL managed it fine. Turns out he was leaning on the electronic aids far too much and couldn't drive. I think he sold it after 3 months.

What engine are you looking at? The 1.8 K is not that bad, especially in VVC guise. You just need to for the remote stat, warm it up and cool it down properly and watch the coolant level. It is worth noting that the weight slowly crept up on the Elise's as time went on. The Toyota engined cars were a fair bit heavier. I found the 1.8 K VVC much more fun than the Non VVTI Toyota. The 111R is where you will make up top end. But you do need to keep it in the Rev range.

The cabin and engine can be quite droning on motorways, so beware this when selecting aftermarket exhausts. I had the fantastic Larini CS, which popped, and banged with my decat. Acolyte bugger of a booming sound at 70-80! The cabin can be a tiring place to be on long motorway journeys. I did a week touring in France and the driving made up for his by miles.

You're looking at a short tail roof so nice and easy to get on and off whilst in the car. The roof fits behind the seats. Boot space is not too bad, but you do need to use soft bags to make the most of it.

Inside if you can get Pro Bax seats you'll be much better off for long journeys. Especially as there is no reclining on the seats. Cabin can get cold due to he exposed Ali but the ventilation is not too bad. You do need to make sure you're windows are dealing properly. As with the Z you'll need to treat the roof to ensure water resistance.

Lighting is actually better than the Z halogens and the fog lights are generally pretty good.

You don't need to worry about parking dings as the GRP just flexes. Where you do need to worry is parking scrapes. This way scratch and spring the ABS bumper on a Z, on an Elise the clam shell will crack-shatter. On my first Elise this resulted in a new rear clam shell after 48 hours of ownership. Not cheap.

Day to day, they are pretty good, you will compromise a bit from the Z4, but IMHO it's worth it. Very rewarding drive and so much fun!

Geary Powell at Eliseparts us a good guy and stocks loads of bits. PSR automotive are great guys and they can supercharge your Toyota engine or pull the K out and fit a Supercharged Civic Type R engine.

Hope this helps and apologies for typos. I'm on my phone.

Never had an Elise but did have an Elan M100 - and it was red ! Like an Elise it drove like a Go Kart - stuck to the road like glue - loved it - in fact I love anything Lotus !

Would love to have an Elise but I'm too damn big ( 6'7" ) the M100 was the only Lotus ( under £10k ) that I could get into

Perfect weekend toy :D :D

This one looks quite nice

Cheers for both above! a huge help. Sums up what I was thinking, noisy, less comfortable but great drivers, which for a weekend car sounds spot on for me  The sound of a type R supercharged version has me stuck, will have to look into what the go is there, if I could convert one that way, I think I'd sign on the dotted line straight away  When you say short tail roof, what are the other options?

 I assumed it was only the K series that were problematic? done a fair bit of work on them so would whack an uprated HG in there if it did go. I've sort of been there done that with the K series though so probably look out for a supercharged toyota varient. hmmm

Yep, you can convert an R model to forced induction-it's called the katana kit & lotus dealers used to sell it.
Not hugely more powerful (220ish as opposed to 190hp) but it gives lots more torque to a normally peaky engine, they do suffer from heat soak though which saps power so it's common for owners to fit larger inter coolers to combat this.
Nothing wrong with the long tailed roof which was fitted to earlier s2's except it's not as quick to remove as the tails are secured with Allen screws, short tail roofs require no tools to remove.

Small world its Jon here that bought that very Elise :-)

I'm a lotus specialist trader if any of you uk guys fancy a trade in. I have a blue Toyota engined eilse the same as this one at the moment. It's a quiet time for buying in over the winter so I'm lurking round here to see if I can get a z4m. Just heading out to pick up an e46 m3 today. Usually try a few different things over the winter months.

Hi jon  still got my 3.0 z4-you said it would be fun & you were right!
Didn't realise you were a member on here, small world indeed :)
Regards

If things work out this year I may be in the market for an Elise. I do miss mine.

Actually the long tail roof doesn't require any tools, but you need to get out of the car as you need tonde tension the roof using latches on the buttresses.

You're thinking of the S1 roof, where you have to basically build it.

Did you not watch Top Gear. Bullet-proof and an excellent off-roader.!!! :poke:

Nice motors imo, lol @ previous post. Hugely surprising the v8 kept going on TG! This specialist is near me, seemed like a friendly bunch. http://bellandcolvill.co.uk the build quality is questionable....esp on newer cars for some reason! E.g. 61 plate Elise sitting there looking lovely sat inside felt like she was going to fall apart! BUT I believe you buy these Things for the drive..
