Lewis to leave mcclaren?

Spotlight on Jenson now, hope he grabs this opportunity to show what he can really do.

Shoot me down - but I have always had the impression that jenson is happy with just the one championship trophy on his mantelpiece.

Or maybe he is just more laid back than the likes of Alonso, vettel and hamilton?

The only thing I can see in Mercedes favour is that they will be one of the few prime engine manufacturers going into the new turbo years from 2014. McLaren will be buying their engines in 2013.

Anyone remember the TAG McLaren 1.5 litre turbos of the 80s? 1000 BHP in qualy trim if memory serves me?

Oh yes, made by Porsche who just love seeing Mercedes do well. I wonder how many miles they did to the gallon?

Andi.

:o I see it as pure financial greed, Mclaren are one of the most successful teams in motor racing, with enormous technical ability. When Hamilton stormed on to the F1 scene, he captivated me in those first two seasons, then with the sacking of his father as manager, we have witnessed his ego and petulance rise, he remains a very talented driver and yes sometimes life has been unduly harsh, but tbh I think most of his bad luck has been self inflicted.

I'm not sure money is the main motivator. If reports are true McLaren matched his offer with Mercedes anyway. I think there was a general falling out of love recently on both sides - Lewis has become a bit of a twit out of the car at times and McLaren have also got quite careless, which seems to have coincided with Ron Dennis taking a back seat (no pun intended). They have undoubtedly cost him a proper tilt at the world championship this year. I think an amicable parting of the ways is the best solution. Lewis is sometimes damned if he does and damned if he doesn't - there are those who say he's never had to prove himself in a lesser car and when he does go to a team that (at the moment) aren't as strong he's also criticised. Let's just see how the next two years pan out. History will be the judge as to whether it was the right move or not.

I bet the fuel consumption figures are eye watering Andy lol......imagine though if Porsche and BMW re entered F1 as engine suppliers....and Honda too they all have experience of 1.5 turbos......sigh......probably just an old school boys dream sadly

I'm dissapointed to see Hamilton leave McLaren. It's a big gamble to go to Mercedes, whatever they promise him. The F1 team just hasn't delivered since the year as Brawn GP.

As for the engines, Mercedes are pretty good with turbo's too, they've got something impressive coming up in their road cars :)
It's the aerodynamics and general chassis setup that seems to be lacking :(

McLaren may well miss Hamilton more than they think, it's very much down to how much Perez can up his game. Button unfortunatly doesn't have it in him to make a slow car faster than it really is.

i'm quite gutted about it tbh, but i think it will be for the better come 2014

It was always going to be win win for mercedes, they kind of backed mclaren into a corner regarding buying next years engines.

I think Nico and Lewis will make a great team, however if next years mclaren is upto par Jenson and Sergio will be a force to be reckoned with. I could even see Sergio outshining Jenson tbh his drives this season have been outstanding.

I'm a big fan of Hamilton (in the car only where he seems genuinely talented; out of it he can be a bit of an idiot at times) but have doubts about this. I'd have thought he'd have more chance of another championship at McLaren, or even at the likes of Ferrari (sans Alonso) or other teams. I know Mercedes have Ross Brawn but the team itself has seriously underperformed since Mercedes bought out Brawn following Jensen's championship.

Really looking forward to seeing what Perez can do in a competitive McLaren though :)

And still hoping Di Resta gets a decent drive next season - that McLaren seat might've been good for him...

Yeah, I do rare Di Resta... wonder if he's be a good fit for replacing Webber?

I think Di Resta will be another Coulthard - A good driver, but not quite got what it takes when compared to the competition around him

AFAIK Webber's already confirmed for Red Bull again next year? I suspect there's a seat going at Ferrari but not sure being a no.2 to Alonso would be a good move...

Anyone know what the latest state of play for who's confirmed to drive for who next year?

McLaren: Button & Perez
Mercedes: Rosberg & Hamilton
Red Bull: Webber & Vettel
Ferrari: Alonso + ???
Williams:
Force India:
Torro Rosso:
Sauber:
Lotus:
Caterham:
Marussia:
HRT:

Very possibly right, but he needs a chance at a better car to make or break it. I rank Coulthard as on par with Button: both bloody good drivers, the difference being Button got a good bit of luck to get him a championship.

according to last weeks race Vijay said that the drivers wouldnt change @ Sahara

Lower teams i don't think there is a change so Lotus / Cat / Mar and HRT and Torro

Williams havent confirmed but from what Mr Wolff said Maldonado defo staying, Senna not confirmed
Massa nearly confirmed for Ferrari f

Just leaves someone to really move to the Sauber along with Kobi
