Photo comparison... G29 vs E89

Oh dear - shan’t be getting one of these
As I said on page 1 a Fiat 124 front which seems to be what others see. Now it looks like that’s grafted onto a dumpy E89
Only the ragtop makes it an improvement over E89
Will wait to see in the flesh to judge properly, but a new model I’m top of range trim like this should excite

At least there is still the option of a 6cyl :) but a real shame Auto only, it looks like BMW are slowly phasing out manual boxes, they've just done it with 140i :(

I would like to drive an MX5 back to back to see which would be more fun.

I like Tim Burton (Shmee) at least his content is reasonably interesting.

Tim.

It's great to see the side profiles against each other, think the G29 styling is quite a bit more aggressive than the previous two incarnations and weights back down to E85 levels, circa 1500 kg for the Z4-M40i. There's some lovely little design styling features, I like the way the side vents look and how the top line extends to a crease over the flanks. I also have a hunch that the gloss black trim on the front apron and side vents is an optional colour and you can have it colour coded per the F32. The pebble beach photos are pretty good, that darker matte orange with the graphite 19" wheels looks lovely, however the red with black alloys does nothing for me. I'm not sure on the overhangs, front styling has been somewhat limited by pedestrian crash protection and the rear to get a bigger boot, but I do like the rear end. I think the mew front end is my least favourite of the three generations.

Almost ten years on and the comments are very similar in vein to those made when the E89 was released...

plus ça change, plus c'est la même chose...

Great comparison pics MrPT

I believe the E85 has the sleekest profile because of the proportions I've highlighted in yellow.
Imo these over-hangs and arch heights are so important and give the Mk1 a lower more compact and classical 2-seater roadster feel.

I like the rear - looks good. I can't say the same for the nose, but hopefully with enough feedback they'll improve it on the LCI version ;)

The problem with doing what you've done there Colin, is that the images aren't to scale - the E85 is also at a slight angle which complicates matters further. I've rescaled the images slightly so that the proportions align with the real-world (e.g. E85 wheelbase = E89 wheelbase), rotated them so the cills are level and added some feature height comparison lines at various points...

Nice! Hadn’t appreciated how strong the design language similarity is between the first two. You can still see that original pencil sketch.

The red black combo is doing the front no good. The frozen grey looks really good.
