Looks to me like a stone chipped front bumper or minor impact has been resprayed prior to sale. Back to the dealer to get sorted but start low key don't go in with guns blazing. Remember it's the dealer who holds the responsibility for selling pre owned cars and nor BMW although the dealer must abide by BMWs code of practice in selling pre owned. AND dont name and shame just yet as you might find once pointed out to the dealer that you get an excellent response..... .

Did you not notice this before you purchased?

i noticed the bumper not linning up the day after i picked it up and phoned bmw to get it booked in to get if fixed,n. never did. they said they would phone me back to get it booked i
i am not sure what you mean about preowned, the car was sold to me as a brand new car (its only 1 week old), not pre owned.
Thanks

It's interesting that your "brand new" car has 247 miles on the clock and signs of damage, yet JDM's "brand new" car has only 9 miles and no sign of damage.
Yours wasn't preregistered or a demonstrator I presume?

sorry, ive had it a week and done the 240 miles my self, it was new with 14 odd miles on it when i got it

cheers

i would not call a preregistered or demonstrator car Brand new as it would not be,

it was sold to me as a Brand new car.

The dealer was around 90 miles from my house , so this would put a few miles on the clock as well.

Thanks

Sorry to see your poor Zed with damage :(

Its very likely the bottom of the bumper has been curbed hence its bent the retaining clip so messing the the gap up. Looks like the dealer or at some point prior to delivery the bumper has been whipped off and resprayed, the dimples are a classic sign of poor paint prep, i.e. traces if grease or something that paint hasn't taken fully.

Exactly same happened too me when taking delivery of a new Vauxhall Corsa VXR, the car was fine prior to the PDI as I inspected it, then come delivery day I couldn't believe my eyes when the salesman drove the car round to the front of the showroom and the bumper at the top by the headlight was detached and actually sticking out. When I looked under the outside edge of the bumper it was cracked where it had hit a high curb. Of course I had signed all the paperwork and handed the money over so it was much more difficult to reject the car there and then. I demanded they swapped the bumper off one in the showroom which they agreed to do but had to drop the car back. When I collected after repair they had just repaired the crack and painted a small area. The repair was decent but it completely killed the new car occasion.

Moral is inspect the car prior to signing anything, and the advantage of taking out their own finance is you haven't handed over any monies so can still walk away.

Will be collecting mine next Wednesday but will turn up well before the agreed time and seek the Zed out before meeting the salesman so I can go over it with no-one around and satisfy myself all is OK.

The problem you have is unfortunately you only noticed the damage after collection, hopefully the dealer will come clean and put it right but they could also play silly beggars and say the car was perfect on pick up.

Hope its sorted.

Tim.

I had my car in a bmw repair bodyshop.. And while there they had a couple of brand new 3 series getting bodywork done.... Literally rolled off the back carrier to get bonnets/ bumpers resprayed... So must be quite common.

You'd be entitled to reject the car immediately....can you prove you called them as soon as you noticed, ie the next day etc etc...as long as you can't give them the excuse to say its something you have done and rectified in the few days after you took the car away.....

Don't worry mate, and it's easy for us to say, but keep calm, complain intelligently, get them to replace the car and get some free servicing out of it for the messing about...

When I collected my car, I spent an hour at the car park to check every body panels and interior. I knew if I left and found defect after I got home, it would be much harder to get it fixed.

looking like it, i dont understand why bmw would not just put on a new part rather than have it repainted.

well the vodka is going down nicley, i would be happy with a new bumper (not a painted one), just hope they go for it as there is allready 240 odd miles on it.
Thanks

If it had 14 miles on the clock when you collected it, I wouldn't say its been a demo, but 14 is a tad higher than some others. When it comes out of the factory it has a small road test on a track to check for rattles etc, if any are found it goes back to be fixed, then checked again (apparently) so this might be a genuine reason for that. This is what my stealer told me with a new 1'er last year....so it might be bullshit!

If its damaged in transit, the dealer doesn't have to tell you....unless you specifically ask. So, ask.

Again, if its pre-registered, that will show on your V5 document if you have it yet.

They could possibly try and wriggle out of the mis-alignment issue saying you've knocked it, but those pits in the paint is not the same, unless they accuse you of getting it resprayed in the week! If they try and wriggle, then poor show on their behalf and that would wind me up.

I'd go back, show them the mis-alignment, the paint pits and the poor clear coat and say you are not happy and you want it fixed and also an explanation of what happened. You could go as far as rejecting it, but thats another league and I have no idea what that involves, plus its easy to suggest, but different when its your own car.

So it would be best, as suggested by someone else, to take it easy initially and stay calm and present your facts (they can't deny there is a problem!) and see what happens.

Hand washing your car is the time when most imperfections are found. I'd double check other panels as well, also underneath etc.

A few comments:

BMW has first rate quality control at the factories. It is unlikely your car left the plant like that. Some amount of orange peel is normal, but not the sort of imperfections you are showing.

Minor shipping damage happens. Usually BMW or the dealer repairs these so that you can't tell. Often the repairs look better than factory and we customers never know. Chances are some of us are driving around it cars that had minor body work done before they were first sold.
Send yours back and ask them to fix it right.

If you are concerned it had major damage, have someone look at it. -- Maybe check the paint thickness?? That would be a hint if the car has had a significant respray. I'd also check that your top is watertight. Leaks could indicate slight body misalignment.

As far as I know, BMW scraps cars that have substantial shipping damage or keeps them for internal use. At least they do in the US.

I came across these way out in the back at the BMW Performance Center across the street from the North Carolina Plant. I suspect they were going to use them for training. The PC does a fair amount of training sessions.

This brand new unsold MINI had similar damage on the other side. No idea what did it. Hard to tell from this photo, but the MINI looked like a total loss to me.

Ouch!

These had to be body shop training tools. I think the other two were heading that way.
