How-To - e89 Cruise Control Retro-fit

Massive thanks to Dave and his laptop.... another e89 on the road with cruise :D :D

 Cheers bud, nice meeting and chatting to you.

Hi everyone
My first post about my first BMW ever
I bought on ebay CC Stalk (9110887 - hope correct one) - Z4 sDrive 23i, 2011 and I think about to buy a K+CAN D-CAN USB Interface.
I can physically install the stalk, but I do not have any experience in BMW coding, so I am looking for someone with a moment of free time over the weekend and who will help me to run the cruise control as well as patience and some goodness to share my knowledge about coding. Tutorial prepared by AnubisZed looks simple and he did fantastic job, but I'm afraid of potential problems with the software ....

Hi bud I'd be happy to guide you through it but I'm away all this week in holiday with pants web access (I'm currently in the club house with their WiFi but I can't guarantee connection all week)
If you follow the instructions in part 2 of the guide you shouldn't go wrong.
But on doing the last one I found an issue if you currently have factory fitted Bluetooth, I will be adding an amendment as soon as I get home. Otherwise it's up to date at the moment.

Despite all Dave's hard work documenting the process, I still had a problem with the coding, as mentioned earlier in this thread. After a number of attempts to get it right, I contacted Craig (BR Diagnostics on Facebook) and he did the coding for me remotely. I borrowed a laptop with the the software on it, and it took maybe 15 minutes. Very reasonable price too.

Chris

:D Thanks for the quick answer, and yes, I have factory installed bluetooth, so I will probably wait for your return and your amendment.
The most important thing is that everything should work before the mid of June when I am going to Europe.

The problem with a lot of BMW coding us that you have to do most of your own research or cobble together what little info you can find. The reason for this is that the really knowledge people who have the info is that they like to keep it to themselves just to make money, with no community spirited what's so ever. I've only come across this self-centered attitude within BMW circles, never in any other marque I've owned previously.
Don't get me wrong, there are some good guys out there, but not many.
I'll add in the extra info to the how-to on my return and keep all my info free of charge

A bit bitterly but unfortunately it is truly said, now almost everyone is looking for cash and disinterested enthusiasts are less and less ...
Waiting impatiently, and you just enjoy your holiday

Yeah alas true, which is sad.
This latest snippet of info though may be useful to everyone, as I've found out what no-one else has written anywhere else (some may already know but are not telling anyone!) and I believe is the problem, that anyone that can't complete the ciding, has come across previously
Yep I'll enjoy the rest of my break then it'll be back to sorting this and other retrofits out for people :D

Hi Dave,

I've been on a test drive today of a Z4 I'm planning on getting and noticed it doesn't have cruise. Fortunately that doesn't seem to be a problem thanks to you and your guide- I've got the VIN and am looking on bimmercat to try and work out what parts I need.

61 31 6 950 263 is apparently only suitable for cars with Dynamic cruise control/Cruise control with brake function (S544A) and not Cruise control (S540). Just looking to make sure that's correct for mine.

61 31 9 123 049 is the product number I get for my config (as below)

For vehicles with
Multifunction f steering wheel(S249A Yes)
and
Rain sensor(S521A Yes)
and
Cruise control(S540A No)
and
Active cruise control(S541A No)
and
Cruise control with brake function(S544A Yes) - again, assuming this is correct

So I'm assuming this is the one to buy, such as this (https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/BMW-3-Z4-Series-E89-E90-E92-Steering-Column-Switch-Cluster-Cruise-Control-Stalk/272698476767).

If that's all correct then I'd probably have no issues doing the physical fitting myself but would be looking to take you up on the offer seeing as my folks are based in Grantham- I'd be looking to do anything between 1/7 and 20/7 depending on your availability :driving:

I can't seem to send you a PM to discuss further (likely as I've only just signed up!) so please feel free to send me one :)

I had no issue with bluetooth during and after coding, got the same year and engine

I believe if you got the right cable, set up the sw as it supposed to be:

and follow Dave's tutorial with my earlier comments here, it will go just fine

yeah and it took a long night of research to piece together the info I thought could be useful trying the next day (actually the same :D )

Many thanks on the part no tintoverano!

Hi Dave,
I already have at home cluster and INPA Ediabas K + CAN D-CAN USB Interface. I also installed Easy BMW tools but from a different source than that given by you because I do not have a 32bit computer. I am ready to physicaly replace cluster but I would like you to check remotely whether from the side of the necessary software everything is ok (maybe via TeamViewer?).
Have you amended already your file, if you can find free time to help me start CC? Please let me know how to contact you by [email protected]

Thanks :D

Morning,
Ok first things first (mainly as I'm tied up for the rest of today), check out the current version on part 2 of the guide and it gives you the latest update files and how to install them ( these files work on all versions of NCSExpert).
Check you are up to date with that and have TOOL32 installed also and if so you are good to go.
I have not got around to adding the extra part I've mentioned but this only seems to affect some and not all.
I'm under taking a Cruise retrofit today so will look into explaining the difference hopefully later if time permits.

"Error in CABDI Look at CABDI.ERR and ERROR.LOG!
COAPI-1043:Fehler bei CBD-Dateiverarbeten PDC_E87.C03......."

Hi Dave. I changed the cluster and it seems to me that up to a some point everything went well, however, at the end of the process, around step 26 the car coding I get the following message.

And I failed to remove the christmas tree from the dashboard. Will you find free time to connect via TeamViewer?

Evening,
Firstly I'm sorry but I won't be able to undertake a session on TeamViewer, I simply just don't have the spare time to do this.

I've just been through to where you think this is going wrong and basically you are doing it wrong. Have you checked out the latest version of the Part 2 how-to? Have you loaded and installed the profiles (as mentioned and instructed how to install them in the how-to)? Are you swapping over to "Expertmodus (offen)" at step 22?.... If the answer to any of those is NO then that is the problem, you need to swap the profile.

Sorry if that sounds a little "arsey", but this is very important, if you miss any step or do not follow it properly then at best you'll get an error message at worst you'll screw the coding of your car!
So, to start use profile "Expertmode" then from step 22 use profile "Expertmodus (offen)" and this should get you all the way through. It's unfortunate that some of the screenshots are not for this process or even the e89 but the text is written accordingly with full instructions. I've now personally had 4 full cruise control retrofits with a 100% record using this how-to so it does work.
