If I was going from a zed to a family car and I wanted a similar amount of fun, I'd consider a Scooby.
Not for me JJ. Great cars but have severe image problem IMO. If I was going to go Max Power route though I'd probably choose an Evo X.

If you want something fairly rare

Inkeys, I went through exactly this when my LO was born about 15 months ago and almost bought (deposit paid!) an 57 plate M5 Touring. I even got to borrow said car for a couple of days.... sadly I never managed to get any greater than 19mpg out of it, and on my commute to work, I got <14 when travelling at 65 on the motorway. If I drove it like the Zed (21ish in the Zed) it was in single digits.....as a result my costs were as follows:

based on 7K per annum:

Tax £470
Insurance £610
Servicing £400
Tyres £500
Warranty £900
Fuel = £3300

Total excluding parts and depreciation = ~£6000

I'm currently running a Mini Cooper S Clubman, but don't tell anyone *shhhhh* Audo S5 was high on my list as was a 550i M-sport Touring.

Perry - thought you'd point me towards Alpina :)

Mr Wilks - funnily enough I walked past a ToeRag earlier and the mind started firing off scenarios. That big Audi would be crazy money in servicing wouldnt it. Been fan of the old Ronin style S8's too.

IK - M5 would be lovely but too juicy I reckon, and same on service costs. Ideally I dont want a moneypit but object to paying for warranties (its the Suffolk in me!).

Daffy - Wowza! Insane numbers and can see why you've moved Clubman! 550 MSport Touring is an awesome rare car though. Bet those single digit mpg's were fun :)

At the moment I'm looking at a range of options in my Autotrader garage. Mainly bimmers but with a couple of randoms thrown in too.

*Essentials for me are leather, nav/bluetooth, any other cabin creature comforts, 4 doors, low tax band (if poss), max 7.5 secs 0-60 (no minimum), decent boot space, road presence, good looks.

E46 330i (low mileage)
E90 325i Msport
E90 335i Msport (petrol and diesel)
Alfa Brera Prodrive
Merc C280 Sport
Jaguar XF 3.0 V6
530D Msport
A6 TFSI 2.0 S-line Le Mans Edition
Z4MC....doh!

I'm also running a low mileage 54 plate 330i M-sport Touring with a spec list that would make most ///Mc owners envious.

All happy memories of our "treg" http://i1164.photobucket.com/albums/q576/beaucostil/sony018_zps0dbc9064.jpg had for 2 years but that was when diesel was under £1 a litre , now you would need £145 to fill the tank :o
A fine list of possibles you have drawn up but in reality i would stay away from a major upsize such as the 5 ,XF,A6 or SUV , if the car is to replace the ZM then you will want a compact sporty feel , the C sport mercs & Msport 3's should be your first testdrives , then you will know if its a go-er or whether another sports is what you want . tough but a nice choice to have

That's sums things up pretty well actually Mr Wilks. I think in my head its going that way. Maybe a touring, maybe not but heading towards faster 3 or C.

Well I'm at the Porsche garage so ill try and discount that from your list of possible cars. Even though you don't want one ill just check them out for you anyway
