E89 Roof fault

Right I'm posting this for my mate who has a 2011 E89 with a roof fault.
When the roof goes down it gets half way and the you get a warning sound and the roof will then continue to open fully.
The problem after this is that on it's way back up it gets half way up and then stops and will not fully close.
He has had to turn the car off and leave it for a while and the roof slowly opens again under it's own weight, once it has done this then it will close. He has managed to do this twice now but has a fear that it's only been by luck and will fail altogether.

Has anyone else had this problem ?
Just thought we'd ask before he has to take it to the main stealers and assume bent over position.

Cheers JJ

I think there are quite a few problems that crop up with the e89 roof. I've had mine in twice for similar things. Once required a software reset, the second required a new microswitch (there are a few of them!).

Thankfully mine was covered under a BMW used warranty else I'm sure the price would be ...... Steep!

Search the forum. Might give a clue as to what might be wrong.
The micro switch in the boot seems a common problem.
Could be wiring to it breaking down and remaking when the roof relaxes.

Cheers Dude, I'm afraid it looks like a pants down situation :(

Have you got any BMW specialist near you? We have a few in Leeds (b&m auto) and the one time I used it they were only £60 an hour labour and all excellent mechanics.

Yes he's local and works in Sheffield. He'll probably be reading this post as a quest so it's up to him if he wants to give them a try.

Cheers

Not exactly the same symptoms but the end result was similar ,I had mine fixed a couple of years ago by a garage who specialise in roof problems mainly on German cars .It was a faulty micro switch no problems since then.
Unfortunately its in the south in Dorking Surrey so I guess not much help for you.

Hahaha yeah a little far for us.
We do believe it will be a micro switch but finding the right one is going to be the issue. :headbang:

Hello

On the E89 the roof control module has full diagnostic capabilities for all the sensors .. so a good dealer with the correct equipment hopefully should find the suspect sensor quickly

regards

He's gone and booked it in at the main stealers because it's easier for him to get it there as it's on his doorstep.
I'll find out what they say on monday.

Currently have the e 85 the car is 12 years I have had no issues with roof , however reading the forum, roof issues seem to be endemic with zeds, It does disapoint me that BMW have learned nothing from 2002, when this car was released,

I have been thinking about getting rid of my baby for a newer model , however ?

Roof faults aren't the same as they were way back!
I wouldnt read too much into forum posts re problems as for every negative post on a forum member there are more members and non members who have never been effected by that same fault !

Once the motor is moved to where it should have always been (boot) it's not a problem anymore,

I have a 2013 z4 . In Jan 2015 roof warning light came on and so into local dealer on Friday for a fix...2 micro switch later and not ready until Monday sorted one of the micros was apparently a complete 'mare to get to. Fast forward to Dec 2015 & Jan 2016 and both rear light pods replaced as leaking water. Feb 2016 and mot plus end of warranty check clean bill of health. 18 days after warranty expired 28th March an less than 18000 yes less than 18000 I've got roof warning light. Thankfully roof closed and warning goes out after approx 1 miles of driving however during this time all the windows except for main passenger side window do not work and heated rear screen cuts out. Ok as soon as warning light goes out. OBD borrowed from a mate shows NO error codes. Car going into dealer tomorrow so bracing for financial impact and call to BMW customer service . My second Beemer last was a 320 coupe and bought new also had persistent fault with emission sensor numerous visits before sorted under warranty. Prior to this had a Megane which contrary to popular opinion was only ever in for service. But very worried about wee Z4 advice from mechanics at work is to get rid of it asap. Any other advice ?????????
